I always go in without reading TWs. I like the shocks.

You can try Kingdom Falls by A Zavarelli, I enjoyed it. The FMC is mute.

Or if you want really really dark, Comfort Food by Kitty Thomas. That also has a mute character and it's my favourite dark romance.
