i do like how shivangi broke down & tried to reason the guy before turning down the prospect but you can see she has her vulnerability & weakness there too..seems something traumatic ..
It was a good convo in that it encapsulated the entire AM dynamics within a few minutes. So on both sides of the convo, there is merit and while the prospect was rude, he was also really honest. You can see rants online of folks who go through the process.
-- What do people want? So for some, they are just looking for companionship and therefore don't have too many requirements. As long as one has a job, a decent salary, same community etc, then the answer is yes. So he was coming in with that kind of mindset. The good thing is that he was not there to play around was earnest about what he wanted. Better than the guys who use AM apps essentially as a way to have flings
-- He is trying to figure her out within a few minutes and says, "you must be like this or that". Within the AM setup, you have basically very less time and so people slot you in. It can be difficult to explain why you feel and how you feel. Bhagya was very polite and sweet in how she was trying to reason. It is not that she is anti-men or that she is in love with her career but she is not quite ready to welcome someone into her life. Often people assume things about you because you are not ready for a relationship and so that can hurt.
-- Now, her point is fair but the questions that is asked back at her while hurting also are realistic. The reality is that as you age, your circle dwindles. Attraction is part of dating, courtship and marriage. So it can make it more difficult to find someone as the years pass and if you are not taking care of yourself well. Is it impossible? No. But difficult, yes. Because the pool is limited and keeps shrinking.
-- Loneliness is an epidemic and people are finding it difficult to connect. So it isn't about settling down but more about having a community. In that, her friend is right that unless you are open to let people in, you cannot survive. We all need people and for that we have to have a door. Yes, it is smart to build walls to protect yourself but you cannot wall yourself.
-- At the same time, most folks don't have the patience to break down your walls. We all have timelines, wishes and wants. When the friend says that the guy reacted out of ego but is otherwise nice, it makes you think where he is coming from. He too would have some expectations but maybe he pared them all down because he really just wants companionship. Then he gets rejected by a girl he doesn't think is that attractive anyway and walks away in a huff because he is also hurt. So to process rejections in a healthy manner can be difficult.
So I enjoyed how the scene encapsulated teh current society dynamics without going overboard on either characters. I dropped season 3 of BALH because I just couldn't relate to that Priya. Here, Bhagya is sweet. While she doesn't want to date, she is not angry or mad at the world. She is not bitter. While she doesn't want to admit, she is lonely and people can tell. All in all, a nice first episode that draws people in.

I liked the first episode had that feel good vibe..Bhagyashree is relatable and strong, independent character..Her bond with Kaddu is cute..Some scenes were bit cliche but overall a good first episode..
I liked how her first love is her father which is a sweet surprise and the new year predictions turned out to be true and he called her..Good it's not that kebab mein haddi blast from the past ex ..Precap was interesting with her probably hiring Rishabh as her hubby..Sounds like the classic rom com trope
But one thought that crossed my mind, I don't know why all characters in the show expect Bhagya to get married and are after her ..Can't she just focus on her career if that's what she prefers..But since it's an Itv romance genre it's better not to think a lot I guess..
I have already made a long comment about the current dynamics of AM and how that was shown in the first episode. So just to answer your question in bold -- I think the reason people harp on getting married is that people need community and people can be very lonely. I would say that based on observation, people don't go after self-reliant people as much because there are some people who are islands. They enjoy their own company. However, even they struggle at times.
I recently came across a post in Reddit where a comment described their situation this way -- "adult orphans" ; the entire post was about loneliness -- the woman had not married, no kids and she was in her 40s. Despite having friends and relatives, many folks feel very isolated when they don't have a husband or children. They go to events but there is no one to celebrate their wins. There is no one to discuss the mundane part of life.
When you are in your 20s, there is plenty of activity to keep you going. Career can be a huge buzz. However, as time passes, lot of people are dissatisfied and feel empty even after reached their career goals. At that point, it may be difficult to find someone because your pool is limited. Everyone you know is busy with their own life and so other than meeting occasionally, you are on your own. So it is from that perspective, there is so much pressure to get settled.
People think that if you don't get settled by a certain age, then you are doomed. However stupid much of ITV is, dramas also show us how we cannot jump into relationships or marriage because we are afraid of the clock or the future. There are plenty of broken marriages and relationships in ITV and so it does not mean that just because you get married, you will be guaranteed a happy ever after.
What is lovely about BALH is that it shows that we are not bound by time. It does not mean love cannot find you even when people have written you off. That is why so many people still love the original Bade Acche Lagte Hain -- it gives hope to the lonely and really tells you that love can find you when you least expect it.
Are we going to put up adoption papers Diya? where is our inhouse HR person when we need her.
My only crib is that why Hindi shows insist on showing Tamil characters wear a shawl with their lungi/vasti. Please no one dresses like that when they are at home.
