Anita Hassanandani Says She Was Always Offered Negative Roles During Her 5 Year Hiatus Due to Yeh Hai Mohabbatein's Massive Success!

It’s like no matter where you go, sometimes the world just wants you to play the bad guy. At least, that’s what Anita Hassanandani has been feeling ever since she decided to take a break from the limelight. With shows like Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Kayaanjali and Naagin and films like Taal, Kucch Toh Hai, and Krishna Cottage to her credit, Anita is one of the most popular television actresses. After a whopping five-year hiatus, Anita Hassanandani is finally back with a new show titled Suman Indori! But this comeback hasn’t been as smooth as we’d expect for such a big name. Apparently, in her years away from the screen, Anita was consistently offered villain roles.

Why always the bad girl?

Anita has played negative roles like Shagun in Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Vishakha in Naagin 5 and now Devika in Suman Indori. The actress was suddenly typecast as the go-to “bad girl” of television. “I was waiting to play a positive role, but once you play a negative role on TV, it is difficult to convince the producer (to offer such a role). In 5 years, I have only been offered negative roles, so I gave up and accepted a grey role in Suman Indori. I always thought my character Shagun (Yeh Hai Mohabbatein) was put in a situation where she had to be grey,” she tells Indian Express.

Anita Hassanandani's life and career

Natasha Hassanandani, professionally known as Anita Hassanandani, made her debut on television with Idhar Udhar Season 2. She made her film debut in Telugu with Nuvvu Nenu in 2001 and in Tamil with Samurai in 2002. The actress made her Hindi film debut with the 2003 thriller Kucch To Hai.

Anita starred in the television show Kkavyanjali, playing the protagonist Anjali, a middle-class girl marrying into a business tycoon's family. Later on, she worked in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi as Saanchi, Teri Meri Love Stories as Simran, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya as Pari, Yeh Hai Aashiqui as Priyanka and in the supernatural show Fanaah series as Witch Preet. Since 2013, Anita became famous from the role of Shagun Arora in Yeh Hai Mohabbatein.

Look at Tripti Dimri, she's been offered same kind of roles after the success of Animal. When actors often get typecast in movies, it's quite common for successful daily soaps as it rans for years - the image of actors during the show linger after even the show is well over. YHM ran for 6 years. Shagun was a hot diva in those years and audience made an image of Anita as Shagun. You can say, this is a curse that actors are to bear for mega hit shows.

Also, point to be noted - Anita is Ekta's BFF but she didn't offer her any show in these 5 years. She might have offered Anita roles in shows but they could be negative roles. Anyway, the important point to be noted is that successful producers don't mix business and personal relationships together. Ekta deemed Anita was best suited for Shagun, so she was selected, not because of personal favors.

Anita has done many positive lead roles like Kkavyanjali and Kabhi Sautan Kabhi Saheli

YHM was a turning point for her as she didn’t want to deal with a hectic schedule like a lead actress does post marriage and YHM being an initial finite series (that changed obviously). Shagun became one of the most popular and awarded negative characters of recent times owing to the style and nuances of Anita etched into Shagun.

the current show she does honestly is so bad but ITV in general is after quantity of episodes than quality airing eps 7 days a week. Also, most shows bar Anupamaa and YRKKH hardly get any hype.

Anita should’ve waited but it backfired when YHM and Naagin had multiple re runs so her face was over exposed in that genre so audiences put her in that category only

Shagun was actually a very interesting character. I would not call her character negative. Specially the pre-leap Shagun. Anita will always be remembered as Shagun. That's a big complement for her as an actress.

Lol nice way to always defend Shagun's crimes saying she was put in situation..There is no justification for the crimes she did..
