Its TABU who was robbed
Tabu in virasat and mahima Chaudhry in pardes was better than both of these women performance
how did Karisma win the national award for not much looking at srk wistfully? people underestimate, madhuri's talent, so played the quiet understated heroine, and she pulled if off so well, the aur paas scene is still copied so much after so long....both madhuri and sridevi were awesome and both could do that sridevi did the same in chandni in the second half

This is actually more surprising than anything else for me for the year 1997.

Speaking of 1997 one of the iconic show came on that year which is south park

Yes an adult animated english show

Madhuri was decent in DTPH,not award worthy , Sri was loud in Judaai as per character ...At the end of the day ,neither one of them deserved it.
Talking about understated heroine, Manisha in Gupt was the real deal, she was terrific in it...
No one liked judai's plotline. It was a hit but is not being considered a classic. Sridevi sold her husband so that was disgusting n Anil fell for both women n both women were ok to share the husband so kind of patriarchal. I don't remember any movie favouring patriarchy, EMA, bigamy getting awards. Movies which used to criticize such ills of society gets awards always.
Masses liked such movies on bigamy and EMA like govinda's movies because compared to today major part of society was more patriarchal but no one used to give award to such stupid movies
Compared to it DTPH was a clean romantic movie with no controversial plot.
Judaai was a cheap cringey movie Watched it on instagram reels. It's not even worth nomination

That is indeed more surprising. I guess National Awards put their credibility on ice at back then.
