But Shatrugna and the sisters were not described in detail in VR.That was one area of creative liberty.Makers could have streched the episodes using them.Shatrugna's characterization was actually good in this show. The youngest handsome prince so the least responsible one.Pampered to bits.
One thing that I found intriguing- Ayodhya was the most prosperous city ,yet in the 14 years of the absence of an presiding king, not a single siege happened .Bharat never stepped foot inside Ayodhaya. He was governing Ayodhya remotely so there has to be someone who did all the legwork in the administration, securing the borders from external forces, strengthening the kingdom from the inside,( internal intelligence)looking after the 350 wives of Dashratha. It could only be done by Shatrugna.
That's true. Shathrugan is mentioned very little and sisters even less. In NDTV Imagine Ramayan, Shathrugan was portrayed as the little kid for everyone and very naughty. Being the youngest, he would have been cherished but not spoiled rotten. Also, Lakshman and Shathrugan took up following their elder brothers and considered themselves as their servants and did not really consider themselves as princes in line for the throne. This could probably be why Bharat was treated as the youngest with Shathrugan under his wings. Rama adored Bharat a lot, evident from his dialogues with Bharat but not much is said to Shathrugan - probably because Bharata took charge of him. Also, when Shathrugan defeated Lavana and came back after 12 years and asked to be with Rama, his request was refused and Rama said he can stay for a week but then has to go back. Possibly because Madhupur and Dandakaranya required someone managing the areas with no allies around, except Kishkinda but maybe they were far away and Shathrugan was very much capable. Much later, when Bharatha conquered the Gandharvas, he came back after 5 years and declared that he wouldn't leave Rama again to which Rama did not object: possible reasons - Taksha and Pushkal were grown up enough to rule and Bharat had established them in two cities in the kingdom, Gandhara was close to Kekaiya, so they can get help from Bharatha's maternal relatives and they were secure. Possibly, Shathrugan's kids were too young when he established his rule after killing Lavanasura.
I think Mithila, Magadha and Kashi were quite prosperous too but they were under Ayodhya. Rama's forefathers had done many Ashwamedha Yagyas (Sagara did 99 of these) which establishes a supremacy over neighbouring kingdoms. As long as Suryavanshi/Ikshvahu/Raghu's bloodline ruled Ayodhya, nobody can challenge unless they are equal in wealth and prowess. If at all Dasaratha did not have sons, the throne would pass on to either the highest ranking Suryavanshi noble in Ayodhya or to a male heir of Vidheha/Mithila since they of Ikshvahu's lineage.
Those days the kingdoms weren't huge and the major part of a nation were forests. Forests were considered out of bounds and considered belonging to sages and ascetics who lived there. Thus, kingdoms weren't huge but were built around cities. The entire city would be a complex of places, markets and trade points. That probably was how Ayodya and Kosala were like and from what I know Kosala and Vidheha were the largest among the remaining kingdoms.
Shathrugan did most of the legwork but he wasn't alone. Dasaratha went to aid Indra in fighting demons and despite a king with no heir being missing, not a single siege happened. Raghuvamsa had plenty of able ministers and warriors and also neighbouring kingdoms were allies and hence may have helped them. They were also capable. In some versions except the 3 principal queens all others entered the funeral pyre of Dasaratha. But it may not be true and they were taken care of pretty well till the end of their days. In South Indian versions, both Bharat and Shathrugan wear the bark clothes and live as forest dwellers. Shathrugan possibly juggled both - being royal in the palace and simple when he came to serve Bharatha. There was Sumantra who seems to know a lot and many more ministers and warriors. The names of Rama's associates are mentioned in Valmiki Ramayana but not sure of Bharatha's associates. Maybe some names were mentioned. I have to read again and find out. Shathrugan must also have many helpers and friends but I don't think they are mentioned.
