There is one fanfiction in MB that I read in AO3.
It has an interesting fleshed out plot though.
Karna kinda is unable to give the final blow to Abhimanyu & makes this impulsive decision to back out right in the middle of chaos.
He leaves with his family but Kaurava and Pandavas mein chaos ho jaata hain.
What I liked about this work is the detailing. Karna knows his flaws & is apologetic. His family and he is on run because he has earned the enmity of nearly everyone (Kauravas and Pandavas by default) and after giving up the throne; he is the upstart suta challenge for other Kings.
Next what I liked was Duryodhan's trauma. That his brothers got killed in front of his eyes and he couldn't stop it impacts him severely and he takes to addictive substances. Dushashan is the only one who tries to reach out to him.
Gandhari distances herself from Duryodhan blaming him for the death of her other children and Yudhishthir becomes the heir.
The best part the focus on Abhimanyu and Lakshman. Abhimanyu and his trauma leaves a deep mark on his psyche forever altering him. Lakshman Kumar meanwhile is the son of the Supposed Devil who struggles to prove to the court that he is an able minister.
Of course then Hastinapur has a new threat and Lord Krishna has plans afoot because Yudh is Niyati and if not Mahabharat then something else has to happen. Moreover Kunti still has her secrets hidden and Karna's children are unable o reconcile with their father's cowardly decision to leave the war.
You all can give it a try.

Just to repeat for those who don't know about Mahabharata. Karna didn't give the final blow to Abhimanyu.
Abhimanyu was rather killed in a one to one combat(after ofcourse having been disarmed by a group attack) with a character whose name is never mentioned
He was killed by Dusshasan's son
I didn't understand this story though so if Karna left then why would the war stop? Baaki log nhi ladenge

The plot is no doubt better but yep...kinda stopped where he was about to hit him and waha se track change Kiya.
Another thing
Shishupal was a friend of Duryodhana in that. Shishupal tries to molest Draupadi and Karna saves her which brings both of them at loggerheads.
So Karna and Shishupal meet again and have some heated discussion when Duryodhana sees this..he comes to them and introduces them to each other. He then says ki Shishupal mere Mitra to tumhare bhi mitra hue.
To which Karna replies ki mera kewal ek Mitra hai tum, ab ek baar bhool kar li kisi aur ko mitra karke ye bhool nhi dohraunga....
