Well maybe not as a direct variation relationship as the title depicts, but do you feel that the advancement of certain types of technology like have caused us to underuse our memory and therefore leave it uncultivated?

Overuse (not moderate/reasonable use) and dependence on the following:

1.) GPS (not even bothering to learn the local roads)

2.) Phonebook in cellphone (not even bothering to know even closest family/friend ie: spouse, parents)

3.) Calculators (not adult stage but as children while learning, not bothering to know basic math such as y=x is a straight diagonal line, using a graphing calc for everylittle thing as they do nowadays)

Technology is great but should we draw the line at the point where we are over-dependent? We memorize at least the basic things, right? Your thoughts?

I used to be great at memorising phone numbers and then I bought a mobile I remember local numbers, but I do need to consult my mobile phone for international numbers! I have seen people using calculators and fumbling with basic arithmetic skills like finding the average of 76 and 80 when we are marking exams. Don't use the GPS, so can't comment on that 😳 I agree that there is over-dependency on technology and it has caused not just poor memory, but also laziness.

😉Difficult this one for me.

Dont use calculators for simple maths as my maths is pretty good. 😊

But do use GPS - it's a godsend and alleviates problem of trying to read map and driving at same time - great!! 👏

Mobile phones/electronic diaries etc - also a godsend for me and help me stay organised. But you still have to be resourcful to operate these things to get the best out of them.

So, in summary, I think theyre good and definitely have their place in my life - but my memeory is my ultimate tool. It's all there in a one very large grey matter cell..... 😉

Remember having debated about dependence on technology good or bad?

Dependence is fine, but unknowingly we are getting into over dependence, bad but the time saved in doing certain things with ease of technology can be invested in some other learning.

Coming to your question:

Technology is great but should we draw the line at the point where we are over-dependent? We memorize at least the basic things, right? Your thoughts?

How do you want us to draw the line using paintbrush or visio? 😆 😆 So draw a line, download your address book every week, while driving make sure you memorize landmarks even if you on GPS, do simple math yourself, never use spell/grammar checking tools as free text editor has none (irresistible though, am guilty of this one 😆 ).

Yeah you are right there has to be line but it becomes part of day to day life and never realize unless your cell konks and you loose all imp numbers specially when you are out of town, priceless 😆 😆

God only gave so many Gig's of RAM per person, As the world advances you try to figure out what is more important for you to remember and what you can automate to be remembered

thing of these devices like the swap space(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swap_memory)
