I loved how you made Surya grow up in an orphanage. Reddy family aayegi hi nai. Cant wait to see how Imlie and Surya fall for each other. It almost seems impossible but I trust you Shree
The suspense is good. Likhte raho Aise interesting twists n turns.
The revelation of Surya being twin brother of Agastya was so good. And then Surya being in disbelief and Imlie giving him support. This is the kind of emotional trauma and bonding I like.
Now I am more than curious to know whom Agastya saw in other car that he lost his concentration. I was so invested in this particularly mystery in the show and right now in your book too. Got a feeing that Surya will uncover many dark secrets which can change the lives of his and Chaudharys.
Thanks for writing this story
Will be waiting for more
I’m saying this again…you write so well that I can actually visualise the scenes. And I am loving this suspense. Please please do complete the story as and when you get time.
In one word.... Awesome....beautifully written.....I am in court....reading this in middle of a case and waiting for the case to be heared...... I have to wear a coat in this scorching heat.. The heat wave is going on in our country.....some people died from heat stroke....Really this time in sunmer tempreture is high...so everybody take care of yourself....
This was so nice. I would have absolutely loved if the creatives introduced Surya in this manner without having Binni the Tinni or Raghu in the mix. They could have not had Reddy family also. Maybe Surya could be an orphan and we could have had Chaudhary family only on the show. The way you are weaving the story - it's beautiful. Surya is really the man of his words. Can't wait for how the Chaudhary's react to the truth unveiling.
Absolute beautiful part Shree. Thanks for the tag.
Kya likhti ho Shree behan!
I am so exhausted with all the traveling, shifting and everything else.. I am reading this, even before watching aaj ka episode.. And this gave me such a respite...
Garmi me baarish karke, mitti ki khushboo, de di tumne..
From sketching Arjun and Raghu into the story, to even having Alka doing her shenanigans, you are really weaving an intriguing tale..
And Imlie ke pyaar me, ye wala Rowdy Reddy bhi kaafi jaldi phisalne wala hai... I can see him falling in looouuuveeee, and blushing like an idiot!
Looking forward to more of this detectivegiri..
Tell me, Is Arjun going to be the Watson to Surya's Sherlock? or will it be Imlie?

Helloz, here's part 4 of this Surlie FF with a lot of detectivegiri... DISCLAIMER: Back in the game of fiction writing after a decade, so har baar ki tarah expectations low rakhna...
Here goes nothing...
AJEEB DASTAAN HAI YE...
CHAPTER 4
*Flashback Continues*
But as he turned his attention back to the case files, he couldn't help but feel the lingering presence of Imlie's piercing gaze. Sigh! There was something about this young widow that intrigued him – innocence and a vulnerability that seemed to cut through his hardened exterior. He found himself drawn to the way she carried herself, the way her eyes shone with sheer devotion whenever she spoke of Agastya and a fierce determination even in the midst of her profound grief.
Surya shook his head, chiding himself for allowing his mind to wander. Yet again! Now was not the time for such distractions. He had a job to do. With renewed focus, he immersed himself in the case, his fingers tracing the details of the crime scene, searching for any clues that might lead him to the truth.
As the afternoon wore on, Surya found himself in a small, cramped interrogation room at the Purvaiya police chowki, facing a pair of officers who had been first on the scene of Agastya’s accident. Their expressions were a mix of resignation and reluctance, and Surya couldn’t help but feel a twinge of frustration at their lackadaisical attitude.
“So, you’re the big city cop who’s come to show us how our job is supposed to be done, huh?” the grizzled inspector named Raghu Awasthi said with a sneer.
Surya met his gaze evenly, his own expression unwavering. “I’m not here to criticize your work, Raghu. I’m simply trying to understand what happened that day and see if there’s anything you might have ‘accidentally’ missed.”
Raghu’s partner, the much younger and timid-looking officer, sub-inspector Arjun Konidela, shifted uncomfortably in his chair. “We, uh, we did the best we could, sir. But there wasn’t much to go on for after Navya’s confession. Just a few beggars outside the temple who saw a local goon messing with the car break. They too were roughed up by the man to stay quiet. But even they couldn’t give us any more details.”
Surya felt a surge of frustration, but he forced himself to remain calm. “What about the accident spot? Did you guys find any evidence that could point us in the right direction? Any CCTV footage or witnesses? What about any leads on who might be threatening Imlie’s life?”
Raghu shrugged, his expression indifferent and proud. “There’s nothing to find. A few skid marks on the road and the mangled remains of the car... nothing else really stood out to me. It was sheer bad luck, you know...”
Surya’s jaw tightened and he resisted the urge to slam his fist on the table, or better Raghu’s face to wipe off that egoistic look. “Sheer bad luck!? Agastya Singh Chaudhary was a respected businessman of the area, and he was killed in broad daylight. Are you really that thick-skulled?”
Arjun cleared his throat, his voice barely above a whisper. “Sir, we, uh... we did consider other possibilities. But the witnesses were adamant that they saw the thug tampering with the car. So we just didn’t have anything else to pursue further.”
Surya let out a dry laugh, running a hand through his messy locks. “Again, what about CCTVs? (As both the officers gave him a blank look) Dashcam footage? (Still nothing) Anything!?” he asked enraged by the level of incompetence.
“Fine! I give up on you idiots! I’m going to need copies of all the evidence you collected, as well as any witness statements or other documentation related to the case. I'm going to take a fresh look at everything and see if I can uncover something you had to have missed!” he barked out, no longer trying to be cordial.
Raghu and Arjun eyed Surya with a mix of annoyance and begrudging respect. “Sure! Whatever you say... Sir! Just don’t go around stirring up too much trouble for others! This is a quiet village and we would like to keep it that way,” Raghu said.
Surya nodded, his expression grim. "I’m afraid I can’t make any promises. Agastya deserves justice, and I’ll do whatever it takes to find out what really happened to him.”
He went back to his desk and was soon surrounded by files and paperwork. Sunlight streamed through dusty windowpanes illuminating a cluttered desk. He was hunched over a file, brows furrowed when Arjun nervously approached him.
Arjun: Sir, may I have a moment?
Surya looked up, with a hint of annoyance: Sure. What is it?
Arjun hesitated again, then took a deep breath. “Sir, it’s about Agastya’s case. Sir, I... I know we messed up. But I believe I can do better.”
Surya sighed. “I have already taken over the investigation... there were far too many irregularities in your team’s initial investigation. I’ll have to start from scratch.”
Arjun: I understand, sir. We let the pressure get to us, and made some mistakes...
Surya raised an eyebrow. “Pressure got to you, eh? This is real life, Arjun. Real people were hurt.”
Arjun hung his head in shame. “I know, sir. I have a lot to learn. That’s why I’m here... I can’t think of a better mentor than you. I promise to work harder and prove myself...
Surya studied Arjun for a moment before leaning back in his chair. “Look, you seem to be a good cop. (Seeing his shocked face) Wonder how I know that? It’s not easy to admit when one has faltered. And it takes courage to seek improvement. That’s how... And I truly respect that. But this case needs experience and a steady hand. You'll get your chance, just not now...”
Arjun’s shoulders slumped slightly but then, he straightened up, determination flickering in his eyes. “Sir, with all due respect, I know what it takes to be a good cop, but I want to be a great one like you. This might be just another high-profile case for you, but for me, it’s an opportunity... To learn from the best!”
A faint smile played on Surya’s lips. He saw a spark of determination in Arjun’s eyes, a spark he recognized all too well.
Surya: Hero complex, ha? You know, this case won't be all sunshine and roses...
Arjun, firmly: I'm not afraid of hard work, sir. I’m willing to do whatever it takes. Please, just give me one chance!
Surya tapped his pen against the desk thoughtfully. He considered the plea. “Alright. You’ve got yourself a chance. But this isn’t some training exercise and I’m not here to take lessons. This is about justice for the victim and his family. You mess up and you’re off the case, understood?”
Arjun grinned wide. “Thank you, sir! I won't disappoint you.”
Surya smirked back. “Well then, let’s get to work. We have a murder case waiting for us and I expect nothing but your best.”
They shared a nod of mutual understanding before diving back into the case files, ready to tackle the challenge ahead.
Later, Surya briefed the commissioner about the development so far and informed that going forward; he will be working with Arjun and Tripathy on the case.
As he left the chowki, his mind was racing with possibilities. The local team had clearly dropped the ball on this investigation but he was determined to pick up the pieces and uncover the truth... But as he made his way back to the Chaudhary Mansion, he couldn’t shrug that sense of unease that seemed to have latched onto him ever since he had landed in this god-forsaken village.
As he neared the mansion, he spotted Alka Chaudhary talking to an elderly woman while hiding behind the giant banyan tree in the aangan. To a novice, things would seem normal, but not Surya. Warning signals went off in his head and he sneaked close trying to listen in.
Woman: – Agastya...
Alka: Shut up, Shanti! I told you not to come back here ever again. Now leave before someone sees you. I’ll come to your place tomorrow and give you what you want.
Shanti: This time, keep your promise. If you’re not at my home by 11am tomorrow, I’ll go to the chowki and tell...
Alka gritted her teeth. “I said I’ll be there. Now leave!”
Surya quickly hid behind the tree but not before clicking a picture of Shanti. He called up Tripathy immediately. “Sunn Chowpaty, (he whispered) I’m sending you a picture. The woman’s name is Shanti. Make sure that I have all her details in my mail within an hour.”
Dinner was another tense affair at the Choudhary Mansion with Suryafilling in everyone about the findings of the day, expertly hiding the latest developments. ‘I have to know more before telling anyone,’ he thought.
Imlie continued throwing daggers his way but eventually ‘retracted the claws, temporarily’ on seeing his genuine efforts to solve the case. But one mistake, she reminded herself, and he’s gone!
Surya rushed to his room after dinner and eagerly waited for Tripathy’smail. As soon as the notification popped, he rushed towards his laptop and began reading. “Shanti Devi... 59-year-old... nurse at the local healthcare centre... no criminal record...” much to Surya’s frustration, nothing odd seemed to jump out in the files.
So why was a nurse here? And why was she threatening Alka? And what was she talking about Agastya right before he had arrived? Truth seemed to be getting more and more elusive. The rest of the night remained uneventful.
Next morning, Surya was quick to finish his chores and summon his team outside Shanti’s home. The trap was set, and now they waited for Alka to arrive. Soon enough, Alka came carrying a small travel bag. As soon as she entered Shanti’s home and opened the bag to reveal wads of cash, they were surrounded by the cops.
The team escorted both the women to the police chowki.
Alka: What is the meaning of all this?
Surya: You tell me? What were you doing at Shanti’s place with all that cash? And why was she threatening you yesterday night?
Alka: I won’t speak another word without my lawyer.
Surya walked away quietly, knowing well that this woman was quite cunning and was really not going to say a word, thanks to the background checks he did on the Chaudharys.
He then proceeded to usher Shanti, a woman whose wrinkles seemed to etch a lifetime of secrets on her weathered face, into another dimly-lit interrogation room. He slammed the door shut, trying to scare her, the clang echoing in the tense silence.
Surya began, his voice tight. “Let’s not waste time. We both know why you are here. Why were you blackmailing Alka?”
Shanti, her hands clasped in her lap, remained silent, a flicker of defiance dancing in her eyes.
“Look, cooperation benefits everyone,” Surya pressed on, frustration lacing his words. “Tell me the truth. Why were you visiting Alka yesterday? And why were you blackmailing her?”
Shanti’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Blackmail is a harsh word, officer. We had... what do you call it... ah yes, an arrangement! I hold a secret that can ruin her life. A secret that has kind of haunted me for years now.”
Surya slammed his hands on the desk and screamed. “What arrangement? What secret? Speak up now!”
A shudder wracked Shanti's frail frame, defiance suddenly replaced with a tremor of fear. “Your...” she mumbled something incoherently.
Surya’s voice grew steely. “Agastya, the man who died a few days back, you knew him, didn’t you?”
Shanti took a shaky breath. Her gaze dropped to her lap, the silence stretching until it became a suffocating entity in the small room. Finally, she spoke, her voice barely a whisper. “Agastya was your brother... Your identical twin.”
The air seemed to suck itself out of the room. Surya felt a cold dread pool in his stomach, a hollowness spreading through him. He gripped the edge of the table, knuckles white, to steady himself. “What? My twin? You expect me to believe that?” he feigned scepticism.
Shanti looked up, a flicker of something akin to pity in her eyes. “I’m old and tired, officer. I have nothing left to lose. The deceased really was your twin.”
“How... What... What are you saying?” Surya stammered, urging Shanti to continue.
“I was paid handsomely by Alka to steal you from your biological mother, Meera, at the time of your birth and discard you at some garbage dump. And till date, she continues to pay me, to silence the truth.”
“But... but I have lived at an orphanage for years before joining the force. And they had no birth records...” he stammered again, clinging to the one reality he knew.
“I couldn’t bear the thought of abandoning a child at a dumpster...leaving him to die... But I knew you would never be safe here, so I made arrangements for one of my relatives to leave you at an orphanage in some distant town,” Shanti explained, adding, “But when I saw you with Imlie in the marketplace the other day, I knew you have returned and was thus trying to earn some more quick cash by blackmailing Alka.”
Surya’s world spun as he struggled to comprehend the magnitude of her words. His mind raced. Every instinct screamed at him to run away and never look back, but a raw pain seemed to hold him hostage, stopping him from moving an inch.
A horrifying picture began to form in his mind. “So, Alka...”
Shanti understood and continued. “You see, she couldn’t bear the thought of a bar dancer’s child taking away her daughter’s inheritance. But what she didn’t know was that your mother was carrying twins. She thought there was only one child... By the time she had realised that Agastya also existed, your father had arrived at the hospital, so she couldn’t do anything about him. I...”
The rest of her words blurred into a white noise. Surya’s vision blurred. The revelation slammed into him with the force of a speeding train. The room dissolved into a swirling vortex of betrayal and disbelief.
He stumbled out of the police station, the harsh sunlight blinding him further. His legs carried him on autopilot, all the while threatening to give way beneath him until an unfamiliar yet familiar hand steadied him.
“Surya,” a panicked voice cut through the haze.
Imlie, who was forced by Dadi to bring Surya his lunch, had just entered the chowki when she saw a pale-faced Surya stumbling out of a room, horror etched all over his face. She rushed forward as she saw him beginning to slip to the ground and gripped his arm, not letting him crumble...
Surya looked up, and his gaze met Imlie’s worried eyes. She continued to steady his tall frame while leaning against the door for support... almost like a lifeline in the churning sea of his emotions... like an anchor in this sudden storm of grief.
He continued to lean against her unable to bear the weight of the newfound truth that was threatening to crush his very being.
“Surya? Are you all right?” she asked softly, her voice laced with concern. She took Arjun’s help and silently led Surya out of the chowki and made him sit on one of the rickety benches at the tea stall right outside. She made him drink some water and urged him to take deep breaths. “You don’t seem so good. Let’s go home. Or do you need to see a doctor?” she continued.
“But the case...” he started to say.
“It can wait,” she almost ordered.
‘This woman’s whole world fell apart just days back, and she’s still standing strong! How? She hates me for my resemblance to her dead husband and yet, here she is, worried for my health! What is this woman made of?’ he thought.
A sudden flicker of determination ignited within him. ‘This is no time to be weak,’ he thought. The truth, however ugly, has finally been brought to light. Rest of the Chaudharys and Imlie deserve to know it too.
The path ahead may seem to be a labyrinth of deceit and shattered identities, but he will navigate it fearlessly. He owed it to himself... to Imlie... and most importantly, to his brother!
His mind went back to Imlie’s words about the accident, about Agastyabeing shocked after spotting something right before he swerved the car... he couldn’t shake the feeling that she might be onto something... that there might be more to this case than met the eye.
Agastya’s death was not a mere act of revenge, and Surya was determined to get to the bottom of it, even if it meant confronting the skeletons in HIS family’s closet.
