GullyBoy (2019)

Wanted to rewatch it before I saw Archies, because I wanted to keep my expectations high

I saw it in the theatre when it released and today again.

Zoya Akhtar's direction is like a skilled graffiti artist, painting a vibrant mural on the canvas of Dharavi. She captures the essence of the gullies with such authenticity that you can almost smell the chai wafting through the narrow alleys.

What's truly remarkable is the film's ability to transcend its gully roots and resonate universally. It's not just about Mumbai; it's about every dreamer who's been told that their aspirations are too big for their circumstances. It's about breaking free from the chains that society wraps around you and creating your own anthem.

Let's talk about Ranveer Singh. The man doesn't just act; he channels the rhythm of the streets through his veins. His portrayal of Murad, a young man with dreams larger than the Dharavi skyline, is a masterclass in nuanced performance. He effortlessly switches between vulnerability and swagger, making you root for Murad's journey from the gullies to the grand stage.

Alia Bhatt is feisty, she's tender, and she's the girl-next-door with a heart as vast as the Arabian Sea. The chemistry between Murad and Safeena is like a perfect hip-hop beat - unexpected, yet so damn infectious.

I don't think Archies can top it, but let's see....

Gullyboy is SoBo's gaze into poverty. Kalki's part is so so problematic as if what makes Murad(?) worthy of her attraction/affection/friendship is his talent. That separates him from rest of the people from Dharavi. As if she would have never been attracted to him if he weren't an 'artist.' It's not so much about transcending your roots or art being a medium of expression, but a way to separate from Dharavi.

Kaala is a much better movie about Dharavi tbh

Worth a watch it as well!
