India West Indies Cricket

India Vs West Indies 1st Test Highlights: Returning to the Indian team after the WTC final snub last month, Ravichandran Ashwin claimed his 33rd five-wicket haul to give India the upper hand against a below-par West Indies on the first day of the opening Test on Wednesday.

Ashwin claimed five wickets for 60 in 24.3 overs to engineer a West Indies collapse as the hosts fell for a paltry 150 in 64.3 overs, with Ravindra Jadeja (3/26) also chipping in with wickets.

Skipper Rohit Sharma (batting on 30) then teamed up with debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal (40 not out) to stich an unbeaten partnership of 80 at the top of the order to bring down the first innings' deficit to 70 going into the second day. Follow WI vs IND highlights below

R Ashwin speaks on his 33rd five-wicket haul

"This was a pretty good performance. There was moisture in the pitch in the first session. It got slow and started to spin a bit more. It got a lot more slower. Personally enjoyed my first spell and had to adapt a bit more after. Not surprised with the pitch, expected it to be a bit dry. In my previous tours of West Indies, when it spins, it also tends to be slow," Ashwin said after the end of day's play.

On Shubman Gill Requesting Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma To Bat At No. 3, Ex-India Opener Calls It 'Unusual'

Ahead of the first Test, India captain Rohit Sharma had revealed that Yashasvi Jaiswal will open with him, with Shubman Gill coming in at No.3.

Ahead of the first Test against West Indies in Dominica, India captain Rohit Sharma had confirmed that young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal will be making his debut for the team. Rohit had revealed that Yashasvi will open the innings alongside him, with Shubman Gill coming in at No.3. The Indian skipper had suggested that Gill has expressed his wish to play one down. Former India opening batter Aakash Chopra, however, believes it is unusual for a player to request for a change in the batting order in Indian cricket.

"Shubman Gill told team management that he wanted to play at no.3. It's a very interesting thing, because you don't usually hear such things happening in Indian cricket. You don't see a player telling team management that he likes to bat in a particular position. Neither does anyone make that request, nor anyone is given that luxury. But the good thing is Yashasvi Jaiswal can now open," Chopra said in a video uploaded on his official YouTube channel.

But, Chopra suggested that Gill's wish to bat at No.3 might benefit India in the longer run, especially when the senior players decide to call it a day.

"But in Test cricket, if there's one difficult job, it's that of a opener. Especially away from home. No.3 is still a challenging spot, but no.4 is the most settled spot and you usually keep your best batter in that spot. You don't want him to bat with the tail. Shubman at no.3, I'm not surprised. I tweeted in 2020 that he would play long for India but in few years time, you would see him batting in the middle. Now, he has himself expressed that wish," he added.

On Day 1 of the first Test, India reached 80 without loss at stumps after bundling out the West Indies for 150.

Jaiswal joined Rohit in an unbroken opening stand after Ravichandran Ashwin led the way with a five-wicket haul.

The Day 1 of the ongoing first Test between India and West Indies ended in the favour of the visitors. Opting to bat first, West Indies kept on losing wickets at regular intervals, courtesy of the five-wicket haul by ace all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin. India scored 80 runs without losing any wicket at stumps after West Indies were bundled out for just 150. However, the match will be fondly remembered for the heroics of the debutant batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who started his international career with a stunning boundary.

The 21-year-old batter, who had an outstanding IPL 2023 season with Rajasthan Royals, was handed his debut cap along with wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan on Wednesday. To add cherry on the cake, Jaiswal opened alongside skipper Rohit Sharma and smashed a four on Alzarri Joseph's delivery to open his international run tally in style.

Currently, both Jaiswal and Rohit are standing unbeaten at 40 and 30, respectively and the debutant will be eyeing his maiden international half-century.

Nursing a bruised ego after WTC final snub last month, Ravichandran Ashwin made the best possible comeback as his 33rd five-wicket haul put India in the driver's seat against a below-par West Indies on the first day of the opening Test, on Wednesday.

Ashwin justified his top billing in ICC Test bowlers' ranking with figures of 5 for 60 in 24.3 overs to decimate West Indies for a lowly 150 in 64.3 overs with Ravindra Jadeja (3/26 in 14 overs) beautifully complementing him to make life miserable for the home team batters.

With more than an hour available for batting skipper Rohit Sharma (30 batting, 65 balls) and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal (40 batting, 73 balls) added 80 runs for the opening stand to bring down first innings deficit to 70 going into second day.
