Is chemistry subjective?

This is something that’s been on my mind for a while, and after giving it a lot of thought, I think that chemistry is not subjective. Chemistry (whether it’s romantic, platonic, familial, etc.) either exists or it doesn’t. I think that there is a difference between liking a ship and that ship actually having chemistry. You can like the dynamic between a couple, but that doesn’t equate to them having chemistry. And vice versa. There have been couples that I really liked that had no chemistry and ones that I did not care for that had an obscene amount.

For example, I really like Stefan and Caroline on The Vampire Diaries! Their relationship was built upon for six seasons and they had such a strong foundation as friends. But they had awful romantic chemistry. They had many, many scenes together where I was like “he did this better with Elena” or “she did this better with Tyler” and I still preferred them as a couple because I like their dynamic together.

Similarly, I was always pretty indifferent towards Kriya and Rey from Dil Dosti Dance, their dynamic just wasn’t for me. But my god, they had a ridiculous amount of chemistry, like, guys I get it!

Okay, you’ve actually triggered something here. 😆 Whom did you ship? Do you still watch the show sometime?

Also, even I had a hard time liking some pairs which I felt they were overhyped & I couldn’t see where the “chemistry” lied in. Such as ArShi, ShivIka, AR (KaJen), etc... I mean, I would like them with any other actor or even individually but them together it just would not click.

As much as I dislike some pairings, I can’t deny the fact they did get popular & still are. Mostly I would like some edits only for the skills of the editor rather than the ship they’ve edited on. ☺️

I usually not so bothered about ship. But i kind of have lists things i want to see before show ends when that can only be achieved by keeping one ship together then i will root for them 😆

And for itv i guess ship is really important as story toh hothi nahi hai 😂 audience atleast need something to enjoy 😂

I don't watch much ITV only watch one or 2 show here and there so don't know much about other shows and pairs 😊

i see the point that you are trying to make but i don't necessarily agree 😆 chemistry is definitely subjective because not every single person in the world defines and views chemistry in the same way. everyone has their own idea of what "good chemistry" is meant to look like. some people may view it as just a sexual thing, others may view it as more of an emotional/intellectual connection, and others may view it as a combination of the two or something entirely different. & there are countless times when you watch a show or movie and people start shipping a couple and see chemistry between them but you might not see whatever they are seeing. so, who's right in this case? there's no objective answer here. even in the examples that you provided, there are several people out in the world who do believe that these couples had great chemistry. what makes your view the right and objective one? 😆

Chemistry (in this case) is just a popular term for interpersonal attraction... and yes, it's completely subjective as the connection happens on an emotional level quite deep inside of a person.

It can be spontaneous or a process...there is even a science that examines all the factors (psychological, social, physical) that could lead to the interpersonal attraction.

One even can learn to establish an interpersonal attraction, it just needs emotional intelligence, empathy and thoughtfullness.

One can also simulate interpersonal attraction which needs good observation skills, intelligence and prudence.

I think it really depends on the kind of chemistry we talk about and the premise/context right? When we talk about the D3 stuff, the gang had chemistry at times, but they sometimes fell so flat that it felt like it was recitation of lines. Similarly for romantic pairings also. The only time I feel like chemistry isn't subjective is in most power struggle scenarios (i.e. boss-employee, teacher-student), especially non-romantic. I think for romance especially, dynamic and chemistry need to mix well to have a successful pairing. You're right in that dynamics alone deffo can't carry everything if the chemistry is shit and vice-versa (read: KR)

I'm a Taarey girl through and through. I'll go back and rewatch from like, the Monsoon Special to TR's confession episode because that was kind of peak D3 for me.

Oh, there are definitely pairings I dislike that had fantastic chemistry.
