WHAT IS MURTASIM ORIGINAL SIN?
Meerab genuinely loves only two things one is Murtasim and other is her grudge against him, love him or hate him, he is her solution and her problem. Her grudge is years in the making, long before they were married, and it has blinded her love for him. Murtasim is losing to her grudge not to her. What is the source of this grudge is a mystery, I have one possible theory?
In episode 35 Meerab says to Haya he didn’t marry me for his mother, so why does she think he married her? She was very confident that once she said yes to the marriage he will say yes too, what made her believe that? She calls her marriage a saazish, including him in this saazish, what is this saazish? Murtasim tells Meerab on their wedding night that marrying her was his majboori, what was his majboori? He only asked her only one question before consenting to marriage, he asked her ‘do you still hate me’, what did he ever do to her to make her hate him? She said on their wedding day the contract was her sazaa for him marrying her, but she asked him to marry her so why is she punishing him?
All these questions point towards one thing Murtasim had feelings for Meerab before marriage and she knows this. If Meerab was aware of Rohail’s feelings who she has known only for 2 years, then she has known Murtasim all her life. We get multiple hints of the past from Saba saying Murtasim was always crazy for Meerab, his behaviour at her 21st birthday party was of a jealous boyfriend, his protective instincts for her he flinches when Waqas raised his hand on her, his initial reaction at the engagement announcement betrayed his real feelings for her, his over-the-top indignant outburst at Meerab being a possible orphan. However, the way Meerab dealt with his feelings was throwing unprovoked hate on him, did she try to infuriate him on purpose to squash his hopes. She had a specific plan for her life and that plan did not include him.
The biggest hint on the past is in episode 27, when Murtasim talks to his mother he sounds apologetic for loving Meerab, why would he feel sorry for falling in love with his own wife unless his feelings started when she was not his wife. He says he didn’t do it on purpose as if committing a crime, if he loved her before marriage then by his own code of rules that is a sin as she was off limits. He continues with I couldn’t stop myself from falling loving in with her, again why would a husband want to stop himself from loving his own wife, this is a natural part of a happy married life. He says even if she made him sign 1000 contracts he still would not leave her, if he was that deeply in love on their wedding day then his feelings must be years in the making it can’t be instantaneous attraction. Meerab is his majboori he married her because he loved her.
In episode 7, When Meerab and Murtasim agreed to marry each other, she says she doesn’t hate him, and she meant it. But later Meerab overhears MB and Maryam conversation that everyone knew about her real parents except her, Meerab is shocked, in this everyone Murtasim is included too. This is betrayal of the highest order it compounds her belief that no one truly loves her and Murtasim is playing games with her. Everything that goes wrong from then on will be because of this horrific misunderstanding, she conceives the idea of the contract at this stage and will punish him for life. The contract, her inability to trust his love and accept her own feelings for him, is because she falsely believes he schemed to marry her.
From Meerab’s POV those who claim to love her took pieces of her life, used her, and threw her away when they were done with her. Waqas and anila couldn’t have children of their own so she was a stand in child for them to fulfil a desire, as soon as she was out of the house they packed away her memories and put it in the storage room. Whatever realization of deep fatherly love Waqas had later doesn’t redeem why he didn’t fight the powers that wanted to marry off his only daughter before she was ready. Highlighted in episode 1 Waqas doesn’t fight for lost causes, Meerab was a lost cause to him, and he did not stand up for her scared of losing. Before his death he realized his mistake, but it was too late for redemption. He damaged her forever when he shut the doors on her face as she begged them for one final goodbye, but he didn’t give her that closure, and when he died, she wasn’t there to bid him farewell. I would have said Karma is a bitch, but this is tragic there are no winners.
MB less said about her the better, it felt like she thought Meerab was special, her saazish to find the perfect match for her sher beta with a bonus of keeping the money in the family, however contract revelation killed what little affections she had for Meerab. Anwar wanted her back not as his daughter but as Murtasim’s wife, his saazish to fulfill some grand khandhan plan and promise to his dead brother. Murtasim knew the truth about her parents, his saazish was he acted on his feelings for her to trap her in marriage. In episode 30 when they talked about love she tells him to get true love you must suffer for it, he didn’t fight for her he took the easy route, plotted, and schemed to have her thus his love is false. He just wants to possess her and when he has his way with her, he too will throw her away.
The simple question is why doesn’t she just confront him. That is the conflict in Meerab she trusts him, her Murtasim never lies and this is why she will not ask him because she is afraid of the answer. If the answer is no, he didn’t know beforehand then she must find another to target to vent her frustrations, if the answer is yes, then that is even worst for her. She is the angriest with him as she loves him the most and she expected that he will be the last person that would deliberately hurt her. Even before marriage they shared a bond, there was trust between them and that trust got damaged.
She has monologues in episodes 14, 38 about her feelings for Murtasim. She says I could never like ‘YOU’, I could only hate ‘YOU’, I could never love ‘YOU’, I will never believe in ‘YOUR’ words. Her stressing the word ‘YOU’ reflects that she is accusing him of a specific crime that goes beyond just forced marriage, this is a personal charge against him, he has done something that she can’t forgive him for. The way Meerab loves is, if someone commits a crime against her not only will she not forgive them she invalidates their love for her. Thus because of her inability to forgive him, she disregards his love and ran away from her feelings for him, but the faster she ran the pull of fate became stronger.
His betrayal suppressed her feelings for him but couldn’t kill the love. This struggle within her made her hot and cold, she could never bare to hurt him, but she couldn’t embrace him either. He understood her torment of losing her identity and her dreams, hence his patience but he never understood the source of her real anger so he couldn’t really help her not in the way she needed to be helped. The more she fell in love with him the greater her internal struggle and it made her more and more volatile, but she managed to maintain her inner pace if she had him. But when he lost his mental balance, it tipped her over the edge with disastrous consequences post episode 46.
