Do we have data on percentage increase by income? I’d be curious to see how the middle class is faring. Are they having fewer kids now than generations before?

Use of condoms, birth control pills, small family everything has been talked about, preached about thru gov programs, television ( as soon as DoorDarshan became prevalent in the mid 80s) etc and as far as I know lot of work has been done going back as far 40, 50 years

(As I said in prev post Sanjay Gandhi even tried forced sterilization)

But that was not enough obviously

Or maybe if all that was not done every other person in the world might be an Indian now

Anyway they should’ve started all those things much earlier, in the 50s itself but I heard Nehru didn’t think it was important when Tata warned him about it

India's replacement fertility rate is already plunging

its below 2 in south and some other states and will reach that all over too

it will actually face a crisis in 15-20yrs which most of the west, japan and now even china is facing

you need population below 30 yrs as they are productive and support the seniors

labor shortage, aged population lot if issues will be there

what you need is balanced population growth and yes as hades rightly said low population is not a sign of sustainability or resource use
