Entertainment. That's what works.

Brahmastra had really silly protags, but it kept you intrigued on the back story.

BB2 and now D2 also turned out to be entertaining.

Either concept and writing need to be good, or if it's a silly plot, make it so darned entertaining that the audience will forgive the lack of logic.
