No wonder. It was tailor-made to appeal to the Tamil people and culture. Though it was promoted elsewhere they stayed true to their roots and did not make any compromises to make it more pan-Indian. No cameos by Bollywood stars either. Mani Ratnam stuck to his own style of realistic film-making too without compromising too much on VFX and action. They dared to use a lot of Classic Tamil too.By staying true to its roots and refusing to pander, the movie ended up being more authentic and attractive to people from other states and cultures too.
