I make use of mythology in my non-mythological fan fictions too. Hasta-prāpya-stabaka-namito bāla-Mandāra-vṛkṣaḥ is my story with the most Mahābhārata parallels, like having Ghaṭotkaca in the family (Chapters Nine and Twelve) and understanding what “para-dharmo bhay'āvahaḥ” from Bhagavad-Gītā means for a woman choosing between two husbands (Chapters Eight and Twenty-Seven). The stories of Uṣā and Ṛśyaśṛṅga are cited too (Chapter Twenty-Six).

This series honestly explores how human characters might imagine themselves, without the deification and anachronistic ideals that encumber ordinary mythological fan fiction. Each chapter is one character's internal monologue inspired by a passage from the Saṃskṛta text of Mahābhārata. Kṛṣṇa worries about his political career. Karṇa reacts to an offer to change his identity. Bhīṣma recalls how he became a famous warrior. I have ideas for more chapters, but I'm also open to prompts from any reader.
Here is my first fanfiction on based on the Pandava's exile. Hope you will like it.
