Relationship between Sid and Tara (Dil Chahta Hai - 2001)

The relationship between Sid and Tara was the most sensitively crafted thread in Dil Chahta Hai. Sid is an artist by profession, but also by temperament. Tara is older and has been bruised badly by the cards life has dealt her. But Farhan doesn't allow us to pity her.

Tara is an independent working woman of strength and elegance. She may be an alcoholic but she never loses her dignity.

Sid falls in love with her, but he demands nothing in return. He doesn't;t even tell her.

Do you feel the love story could have been fleshed out better? Is it inconceivable that a young 20-something should fall in love with an older divorced woman?

More importantly, do you think in a laugh-out-loud funny film like Dil Chahta Hai, this love story strikes an incongruous note? Or d you think it blends in well?

I personally loved the feelings Sid had for Tara, so pure and unusual. I loved the way their relationship remains undefined till the end. I loved the way he stands up to Akash when he mocks his feelings.

What are your thoughts on this particular love angle in Dil Chahta Hai?

It's been a while since I have seen this film. But what I remember is Sid and Tara had a great bond. There was no name of their relationship, Sid never confessed even to himself. It was so different from the other two love stories which had attraction both physical and emotional.

Sid and Tara shared a nameless bond, there was no give or take, no titles nothing infact there wasn't even a relationship, it look like they were missing something and they found it in each other.

Yes it looks a very deep and mature angle for a film like that but the light-hearted moment came only when all 3 of them were there in the same fame, alone they had their own arc and problems to deal with. And Sid was always shown as more mature than the other two.

I found it stupid, no offense. It was just a crush his end and nothing more than that. Bollywood movies love to throw around love willy nilly over every awar pagal deewana acting cuckoo over someone.

Watched DCH almost 20 years back, since then have re-watched it only in bits and pieces, never the whole film.

If I recall my impressions of this relationship correct then I did not much like it. It was a crush he had on a very vulnerable woman, she leaned on him in her dying times. He was never very invested in the relationship(if it can be called a relationship) or her, that is why he easily overcame her death.

This! That movie got saved by Saif , Sonali and Saif’s interactions with others. I found all the other characters boring and stupid. 😳

I agree that it was a crush on his part and maybe friendship on her part. I haven’t seen the movie in years so my memory might have failed me. But doesn’t he confess his love to her and gets rejected?

can't love start with a crush, sometimes it evolves into something deeper or falls apart. In this case she stalls it so there was never a chance of it being anything beyond a friendship. Akshaye's charcter is more mature than his age, some people are like that, they may not fit in with their age group and find company in older people

it was very ahead for its times, it was shown very tastefully and of course excellent acting

each character had their own story which is a reflection of their personality

znmd was an extension of this film, which is why though well made it is not origina and didn't have the wow factor which DCH had when it released. Farhan's character is a mix of Aamir and Akshaye, Abhay is Saif and Hrithik is some parts Aamir, Katrina is Preity

More than their relationship, the consequent conflict between friends is what makes the movie more interesting and special. The drifting apart, the moving on, the eventual reconciliation without too many words. Looking back, I realize it is what I connect to the most, you see the growth. ZNMD too tried to have a similar arc, but there you are told about the arc, here you feel it with the friends.

Even I end up comparing both the movies somehow, not just because of the three friends angle, but there are certain elements in ZNMD due to which you kind of go back to DCH. 😆 Out of the two though, I believe DCH has aged better than ZNMD, of course it is my personal opinion.
