He's my favourite director in Bollywood.
Technically sound, a great storyteller, and heightened aesthetic sensibilities.
His first film Vicky Donor was commercial cinema at its best. Hilarious and left me in splits throughout. Humour matched with a sweet love story between two different communities!
His second film Piku was 10/10 for me. The performances were lit, the storytelling was lit, the humour though supposedly toilet humour at times, was not gross and the film was punctuated with a unique flavour all its own.
October was my favourite film of his. The metaphor of shiuli brought a lump to my throat. The love story was unique, I won't even call it a love story, it was a bonding of two souls and Dan's undying compassion for Shiuli transcended the vocabulary of romantic love. Beautiful. Simply beautiful.
Gulabo Sitabo was fun! I liked it even though it could have been done with some editing. But the film had its heart in the right place and boasted of bravura performances by AB Sr. and Begum. The decaying mansion was just a metaphor for decaying morals and the theme of greed is well-depicted.
Then came Sardar Uddham, which was absolutely riveting and mind-blowing. Technical aspects were superb, and the tragedy was brought out in a way which was not dark, but realistic.
He's one of the best directors in Bollywood today. I consider him a genius and can't wait for his next movie!!!
