No mastani was not legal wife of Bajirao infact baji himself never gave mastani rights of wife or called her his wife.
In 18 century no where in whole india a muslim can be converted into hindu , Islam do have procedure of converting non muslim into muslims but sanatan dharam dont have any procedure & if a child both parents r hindu then only he or she will be consider hindu .All Mughals hindu brides were definitely converted into muslims thou only akbar & Jahangir allowed their wives to worship their gods as well celebrate their festivals but all Hindu brides were buried their last rites were not done according to Hindu rituals , all Hindu brides had muslim titles only akbar's wife jodha wished to be buried next to akbar which was not fulfilled so Jahangir made a tomb for her which very close to akbar's tomb .
Just think about this chatrasal was established hindu king still no rajput married mastani why ? Rajputs were not in Bundelkhand but we're in Rajputana 2, not all Rajput supported Mughals Rana Pratap descendents were very much surviving . Mastani was said to be extremely pretty still no rajput showed interest in marrying mastani why ? If bangash would had not attacked bundelkhand then would mastani stay unmarried whole life ? Chatrasal definitely was facing problem in finding groom for mastani .
Bajirao can never marry mastani legally as sanatan dont allow that so he no where asked her conversion . This was d reason mastani was gifted to Bajirao not married . If she was hindu then chatrasal would had arranged her wedding with any rajput. As chatrsal could not married mastani to any rajput so he gifted her to Bajirao .
Khand vivaah is not legal marriage itself rajput used to practice it , by this they bring non rajput women under their wings but still d child born out of such marriage is considered illegitimate only as their parents don't belong to same community.
Maharashtraian don't believe in khand vivaah so naturally for them mastani can only be mistress 2 Bajirao & who will respect a woman whose own father gifted her to a man without thinking much
Acc to some articles mastani is not her original name her name was most probably Meher un nissa , she was part of some mastan group who use to worship lord Krishna so she got mastani name.
It is considered as a historical blunder only thou she was not married to baji still became part of political alliance. Bajirao faced many problems coz of this one alliance his enemies who were present in satara court who were finding a way to defame him for them mastani was easy bait to defame him as being chitpavan brahmin he was having relationship with a muslim woman that 2 without marriage.
Some where Bajirao knew mastani won't be accepted by hi society this was one of d reason why he was reluctant to accept her initially but obligation was from chatrasal so he has to keep her with him anyhow as she was his political responsibility.
After shamsher's birth when mastani named him Krishna that time Bajirao named him shamsher Bahadur as he knew his son won't be a hindu .
