The video makes some very good points. Digital markets gives all of us access to all sorts of cinemas from around the world. Language is no longer a barrier. And Bollywood was very formulaic. But aren’t South Indian movies formulaic as well? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a south film so I’m genuinely asking. Aren’t RRR, Pushpa, and KFG actions films with exaggerated action sequences?

I have seen several analyst comment that one of Bollywood’s biggest problems is how they spend the budget. A high budget Bollywood movie spends a good portion of that budget on the star’s salaries instead of towards the production quality.

I don’t think Bollywood is finished. I think like the video says Bollywood is not longer the big and solo market. We’ll probably see more collaborations of all Indian artists. Assuming this trend continues.

I don't think it's over, but Bollywood needs to find its own event films again, which have been missing and on a major decline in the last 5-10yrs. Maybe only stylized action is what they have recently. In the 90s/2000s, the family/ romance drama were those. Formulaic films aren't the problem, it's just telling the story in an engaging way. SSR is master at this. Even Avatar was basic storytelling. But technically their films are much stronger in the sense that technology is used to enhance the movie and not substitute for everything else.

I think BW is struggling with a complete lack of creativity, in all aspects. Storytelling, Music, everything - they are all remakes.

It also does not know what to do with the fact that it's primary superstars are aging, and no longer suit the same type of films. They have relied on them for so long. The younger generation is supremely boring and lack charisma. Half of them can't even speak the language properly. Then there is extreme levels of power play and wish to close off the industry to outsiders. When you limit talent, you will lose out eventually. In any company, only promoting within is not good, just as hiring only outside talent is not good.

But writers and storytellers need to empowered as well. Some of the new age writers are just too urban.

There are what 6 South Indian films which have made money in north? Multiple of these pan-India films have sank without a trace in the last two years. I think the whole South movie craze in Hindi markets is rather exaggerated. People who are turning up for RRR for Rajamouli's name are not just simply going to turn up for other Telugu films or Prabhas films or whatever. It's the same thing with Hollywood. Only Marvel makes money, and even 3 of their 4 films tanked last year. Batman didn't do particularly great, the new Harry Potter is going to tank miserably. Bollywood's bigger problem is their own films, not these anomalies they want to blame.

Exactly I love the comparison of Sairat to Dhadak. The basic difference was the lack of talent in the remake. I hate to say more so the female lead. It is one of the only south films I watch with subtitles. Loved it !
Shahrukh, Madhuri, Aishwarya and Preity Zinta so many others that made Bollywood become Bollywood were all outsiders. Even in the later stages there were Priyankas and Vidya Balans.

Bollywood is not progressing. Two reasons:

1) Spent too much time massaging the egos of the superstars, allowing them to churn out really bad movies and make them lavishly budgeted projects that were successful only because of the star.

2) Nepotism. Yes I know it’s everywhere. But right now, 90% of current top actresses are star daughters. And Alia, the worst of them, had hand-made tailor made projects made for her to cover her claws. Such a panoti she is, single handedly ruined Bollywood

There's lot more nepotism in Telugu film industry probably more than Hindi film industry.

The top heroes from Telugu industry are scions of big film families of TFI. But for every star/ film maker son there are dozens of star/ film makers' sons who couldn't make it. So nepotism is not entirely to be blamed.

NTR JR is the grandson of the legend NTR. So many of his grandsons tried to make it in films but none of them succeeded the way Jr NTR could. Same with other top Telugu stars like Mahesh Babu. Mahesh Babu is at the top while his elder brother tried so hard first as actor then as a producer eventually as TV actor but couldn't succeed hepassed away due to liver related illness this year while he's still in his early 50s.

Film stars and producers can launch their sons/ daughters in movies but it is the audience who will decide their fate.
