The idea that Bollywood is finished or everyone in our part of the world is going to start watching Tollywood (because that is largely what people mean when they say "South movies") instead is definitely a massive exaggeration (and I'm saying this as a Telugu person for anyone wondering 😆).

But it is true that if they don't want to eventually reach a stage where they actually are finished, Bollywood need to cut down on the nepotism (something they seem to be realising recently), and produce more content that the general public actually want to watch, to put it simply.

Also on a slightly different note though the idea some people are pushing that certain Tollywood films succeeding in recent times is due to the fact that the masses want to watch nothing but typical action-masala stuff is just totally false.

If that was even slightly true, recent BW movies in that genre like Bachchan Pandey and Radhe would have at least been hits, if not blockbusters considering they have established stars in them as well.

And other recent BW movies like TKF, and even Gangubai Kathiawadi wouldn't have been the successes they were either.

Plus sticking solely to Tollywood, Rajamouli and K.V. Vijeyendra Prasad (his father who writes his movies' stories/scripts) are simply brilliant, and their films that have gone on to become huge pan-India hits are actually nothing like your average Bollywood masala-action film, or the Tollywood counterparts of that either.

100%. People want watchable movies. That's it. Rural people will flock to an urban movie if it's well made. Problem is not in the audience. It's in the storytelling.

I mean, Baahubali had a strong feministic streak (the dad, not the son). Are you telling me rural audience is feminist? The story was told in a manner which connected to everyone is all.

I'm not even on the left but this narrative is beyond ridiculous and hearing people repeat it these days makes me literally laugh 🤣.

Atheism and far-left thinking has always been more common in Andhra/Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala as compared to the North. These places have always been more socially liberal than most of the North in many ways too (which is probably why there is so much in the face sexuality in many mainstream Tollywood films and it's not really seen as controversial the way it would be in the North).

Some of this can be easily seen in the fact that BJP has literally *never* won state elections in any of these places, even today while they sweep the North...

South movies are promoted as patriotic Hindu movies? Whoever is claiming this has clearly not watched any Malayalam movies. They're about as atheist as you can get in India without outright saying it.

Exactly. The vast majority of people appreciate good acting, writing and direction, and if all those things are present (and of course there's some good publicity along with that 😆 ), the movie would almost definitely get good collections regardless of the setting/genre.

And from what I can tell, the general public now are actually more open to storylines and messages that aren't traditional than they were in the past, so saying "audience won't accept anything else" is a poor excuse for a lack of creativity or showing regressive messaging.
