Part 3
"Samar, itna kuch ho gaya aur tumne mujhe kuch bataya bhi nahi!?" Kinjal exclaimed while setting the curd.
"Main kya karta, bhabs! Mujhe mauka hi nahi mila! Tab hi maine Sweety ko mummy k saath overnight stay ke liye bheja aur bhai se kaha unhe ghar drop karne k liye."
"I'm sure mummy ki aawaaz sunkar Anuj ji relieved feel kar rahe honge! You know what? Tumhe unhe call karna chahiye. He'll feel even better!"
"Is waqt? Kya pata woh rest kar rahe ho?"
"Mujhe nahi lagta ki aaj raat unko neend aayegi!"
"Theek hai. Main terrace pe jakar unhe call karta hoon."
"Unse baat ho jaye phir Nandini ko bhi call karna."
"Use toh main milne jaunga! Agle do din milna nahi ho payega na.."
"Don't be so adventurous! Ba jagi huyi hain. Woh moti baa ke liye gajar ka halwa bana rahi hain."
"Phir toh Nandu ko uski terrace pe bula leta hoon. Dono aamne- samne baithkar baat kar lenge!"
"You amaze me, Samar! Tumhare pass kitne sare ideas hain! Apne liye, mummy k liye. Thode se apne bhai ke saath bhi share karo!"
"Sure! Waise.. jahan baat mummy ki aati hai na wahaan main emotional ho jata hoon. Mummy ko aise koi lovey-dovey moments kahan mile, bhabs! I wish kabhi main mummy ko Nandu ke ghar bhej paun aur Anuj ko yahaan la paun! Phir wohlog bhi aise hi milenge! It's such a lovely thought!"
"Yeh thought reality me tab hi badalega jab mummy Anuj ji se apne man ki baat kahengi! I just hope is bar woh privacy ka fayda uthaye aur unhe bol dein!"
"Fingers crossed!"
.....................................................
A sad smile laced Anuj's lips as he opened his red diary.
He recited the shayari which he had written a few days before moving back to Ahmedabad.
.....................................................
Zamaaney beet gaye banjar zameen ko taraste huye,
Kab se dekha nahi baadalon ko baraste huye!
Sehmi hui, siskiyaan leti hai, udaas hai,
Pyaas mitey phir saans chhootey
Ab toh yeh hi aas hai!
Uparwaley, ab toh meherbaani kar de!
Saalon se padi daraarein bhar de!
.....................................................
"Tab bhi yeh hi lag raha tha ki kisi tarah Anu ko ek bar dekh loon! Phir reunion party plan karne ka khayaal aaya. Aur ab yeh.."
He was interrupted by his buzzing phone.
"Samar? Is time pe kyun call kiya isne?"
His heart thumped as he answered the call.
"Kuch hua hai kya Samar? Itni der se call kiya tune. Anu.. theek toh hai na?"
"Ha Anuj. Aap tension mat lijiye. Yahaan sab theek hai. Sorry! Mera intention aapko darane ka nahi tha!"
"Not your fault buddy! Mere man me ajeeb si feeling aayi. Anyways, tu bol.."
"Aap boliye! Mummy ki aawaaz sunkar better feel kar rahe hain na?"
"Nah! I feel.. miserable!"
"Miserable?! Kyun?"
The surprise was evident in Samar's voice.
"Maine toh uski aawaaz sun li par uska kya? Tera voice note kain bar suna aur kain bar koshish ki.. use call karne ki. Number dial kar k turant kaat diya. I'm just so.. vulnerable right now! Dar lagta hai ki use kuch.. aisa na keh dun jo mujhe nahi kehna chahiye!
"I can understand. Please calm down."
"Guilt is a very strong emotion to live with! Aur.. is waqt sabse zyada mujhe woh hi bother kar rahi hai."
"Aap guilty mat feel kijiye! Mummy ne aapki.."
Anuj interrupts him before he could finish.
"Maine teri mummy ko bahut pareshan kar liya, ab aur nahi! Maine decide kiya hai ki main kal subha use directly call karunga. Tab tak mujhe apne emotions or thoughts ko.. filter karne ke liye thoda time mil jayega."
"Filter karne ki kya zaroorat hai? Unhe pata hai aap unk liye kya feel karte hain."
"I know par.. I.. I don't want to make her uncomfortable. Kuch aisi cheezein hain jo.. sirf mujhe pata hai. Main Anu ko nahi batana chahta hoon. Woh dar jayegi.."
He thoughts went back to the night of Chhoti Diwali and he swallowed hard. Anupama had no clue about it.
"Okay. I hope aap.. dheere- dheere unse sab kuch share kar paye aur woh aapse."
"I'm hoping against hope."
"Don't worry. Aap please rest kijiye. Zyada sochiye mat. Aapne khana khaya?"
Anuj couldn't reply immediately.
"Hello?... Kya hua Anuj?"
"Anu ki yaad aa gayi, phir se! You're a carbon copy of your mom!"
"Best compliment for me! Thank you!"
"Thank you kiddo! Meri itni parvaah karne ke liye!"
"Please don't be so formal! Aur ha, aapko kal mummy se baat karni hai toh dopeher tak wait karna padega. Subha thoda mushqil hoga mummy ke liye kyunki kal ka unka schedule bahot tight hai. Aap bhi dopeher ko free honge aur mummy bhi 4 baje tak free ho jayengi."
"Fine."
"Take care. Mummy ki chinta mat kijiye, she's fine. Aur GK dude bhi theek hain. Humlog regularly milte rehte hain."
"GK dude!?"
"Woh.. unhone hi kaha tha ki woh cool dude I mean bapuji k friend hain isiliye main unhe bhi GK dude bulaun!"
"This GK I tell you!", said Anuj with an audible smile.
"He's so cute! Anyways, aapne khana nahi khaya ho toh kha lijiye.Take care. Goodnight."
"Okay. You too. Goodnight!"
................................................
Anuj carelessly tossed the phone on the edge of the coffee table from where it fell on the floor.
As he bent to pick it up, his hands brushed against hers and she picked it up for him.
"Tod dijiye! Waise bhi kisi kaam ka nahi hai aapka yeh.. gadheda phone!"
Clad in an orange saree, she gave him a steady glare.
"Anuuuu...."
Her name slipped out of his lips mingled with a sigh.
"Finally tum mere sapne me aa hi gayi!"
He looked heavenwards and smiled through his tears.
"Lagta hai aaj Kanhaji mujhse bahut khush hain! Pehli aawaaz sunaayi aur ab tum..!"
When he tried to hold her hand she walked away from him.
He followed her while calling out her name.
"Kya hai?", she asked in an unfriendly tone.
"Itne dino tak kahan thi, meri jaan?"
"Main kahaan jaungi, Kapadia saheb?"
She placed extra stress on the word saheb.
"Main toh kuye ka maindak hoon! Kal jis kuye me padhi thi aaj bhi us hi me padhi hoon! Ane tame toh mota seth maanas chho!/You're the big shot businessman!"
Again she walked away from him.
"Aapko jab, jahan jana ho aap aaram se wahaan chale jate hain! Huh! Bina bataye Rajkot aa gaye aur mujhe poochhte hain ki main kahan thi!"
"I'm so so sorry! Please meri taraf dekho.."
"Kabhi aapne socha ki jisko ek din me dus bar "Anu", "Anu" sunne ki aadat ho usko.. Dus dino me ek bar bhi sunne ko nahi mile toh kaisa lagega?"
"Achchha!? Tumne socha ki jisko ek din me dus bar tumhari daat khane ki aadat ho usko.. dus dino me ek bar bhi daant khane ko nahi mile toh kaisa lagega?"
"Daant khane ka itna sauk ho ne Kapadia saheb toh pehle baat karni padhti hai!"
"Main kal call karne hi wala tha.."
"Oh, aem? Bhaley ne tyare!/Oh, is it? Alright then."
She turned around to face him.
"Kal daant khane ki taiyyari kar lena aap! Jab tak aapke kaan se dhuaan nahi niklega tab tak daat padegi!"
"Tum jitna chaho daat lena par please Anu.. Mujhe Kapadia saheb mat bulao!"
She made a face and left.
Anuj tried to hold on to her saree pallu but it slipped out of his right hand.
He closed and opened his fist but to no avail.
He stared at his hand which had held on to not just her pallu but also her hand in the past.
Now it felt cold and calloused upon touching.
He missed the softness of her hand and the warmth of her presence.
"I'm very sorry Anu! Kal jab main tumhe call karunga toh please mujhse baat karna. Ab yeh khaamoshi mujhse bardaash nahi ho rahi hai.."
He played their dance videos on loop while finishing dinner.
.....................................................
"Sweetudi, tu jara bahar wale kamrey me baith ne. Main phataphat packing kar loon phir bulati hoon."
Once Pakhi left Anupama placed a gift bag at the bottom of her travel bag.
"Kal.. Anuj ko sirph ek nahi, bahot sare surprije milenge!"
She rummaged through her closet looking for a saree fit for the special occasion.
"Yeh neeli wali saree pehen loon?"
She rejected it the very next moment.
"Nahi yeh rang toh bahut gehra hai. Moti baa kahengi din-dahadey aise gehre rang k kapdey pehenkar aa gayi!"
She examined a baby pink saree next and rejected that as well.
"Yeh saree hai toh bahot achchi par iska rang halka hai. Saphar me mayli ho jayegi."
Still she placed the saree in her travel bag.
"Pinakin ke ghar jaungi tab pehen lungi. Par.. subha kaunsi pehenu? Pata nahi kaisi-kaisi sareeyan bhari hui hai mere kabaat (cupboard) me!?"
She fell silent as her hand touched a saffron coloured bandhani saree.
"Yeh saree toh tab pehni jab.. Anuj k saath site dekhne gayi thi."
She smiled as she thought of their day out, which turned into a night out, the temple visit and all that followed.
She coloured at the thought of Anuj calling her name in a semi-conscious state.
Each "Anu" had sounded different and more endearing than the previous one.
"Main itni budhdhu kyun hoon matlab.. thi?"
Even those kids who met them for the first time could see what she had failed to see, rather failed to acknowledge.
She recalled the conversation with Sheena when she had visited her house to return MaAn's clothes.
................................................
"Thank you beta!"
"Pleasure!"
"Is thayli me tumhare phriend ke mummy pappa ke kapdein dhokar, istri kar ke rakh diye hain. Us raat agar kapdein nahi badle hote toh Anuj ki tabiyat jyada kharab ho jati."
"Sir ki tabiyat ab kaisi hai?"
"Ab woh theek hain. Tab unko waisi haalat me dekhkar aaplog bhi ghabra gaye the!"
"Ha, jab unko chakkar aaya tab thodi der k liye dar gaye the. Par humein pata tha, jinki life partner aap ki jitni caring ho, unki recovery me zyada time nahi lagega!"
Anupama didn't know where to look and subconsciously blinked several times.
"Woh.. Main unki dost hoon aur.. bujiness partner bhi hoon. Bas!"
Now it was Sheena's turn to feel embarrassed.
"I'm so sorry aunty! Hum sabko aisa laga ki aap dono business partners bhi hain aur.. life partners bhi! Actually.. jab aap change kar rahi thi na tab sir bar bar poochh rahe the ki.. aapko towel diya ya nahi? Fresh clothes diye ya nahi? He was so concerned about you!"
Her expression changed drastically in the next moment.
"Wait a minute! Sir toh keh rahe the ki aap dono college time se saath me hain?"
"Tumse samajhne me bhool hui hogi. College me hum ek hi class me padhte the. Woh bhi sirph pehle saal me. Phir.. Woh America chale gaye. Aaplog us raat video dekh rahe the ne, humare college reunion ki? Us hi din hum mile, purey 26 saal ke bad, bolo!"
Sheena's jaw dropped in shock.
"Are you serious?! Aaplog jab dance kar rahe the tab aapki chemistry dekhkar aisa nahi laga! I mean.. You guys were so in tune with each other! Aisa laga jaise aap relationship me hain!"
Anupama vehemently denied while turning red with embarrassment.
"Nahi.. Nahi! Aisa kuch bhi nahi hai! Hum sirph achchhe dost hain! Apne.. doston ko bhi.. yeh baat bata dena, ha?"
"Ya.. Ya.. Of course!"
........................................................
"Mummy? Aap akele akele smile kyun kar rahi hai?"
"Kuch nahi beta woh.. Main yeh hi soch rahi thi ki tum.. Aaj-kal k bachchey kitne tej ho! Main toh.. tumhari umar ki thi tab bhi samajh nahi payi.. daphphod/duffer thi aur aaj bhi waisi hi hoon!"
"Kya samajh nahi paye?" Pakhi frowned.
"Kuch nahi! Chal, so ja. Kal subha school hai ne."
"Ha, main ek minute me aayi!"
"Bahana nahi ha Sweetudi! Bahot chatting kar li!"
"Main chatting karne nahi ja rahi hoon. Bus ek minute dijiye!"
Anupama was shocked to see her return with a box of rose petals.
"Aa badhu su chhe? /Yeh sab kya hai? Gulab kyun uthake layi?"
"Isme sirf gulab nahi nimbu ke chhilkey bhi hain! Inko main raat bhar bucket me rehne dungi. Aur jab kal subha us pani se nahaungi toh meri skin clear ho jayegi! Aisa maine newspaper me beauty tips section me padha tha."
Anupama tried hard to control the laughter that was bubbling in her chest as she didn't want to offend her daughter.
"Tab se main try karna chahti thi. Ab.. ghar pe toh kar nahi sakti toh yahan kar leti hoon!"
"Tujhe yeh sab try karne ki kya jarurat hai, mari beautiphul chhokri?!"
"Ab layi hoon toh karne dijiye na mummy, please! Kitni mushqil se ba se chhupakar layi hoon!"
"Theek hai. Ja! Lekin aadhi balti bharna, baki aadhi me main subha garam pani bhar dungi."
Anupama placed the saffron saree on the seatee.
"Kanhaji dhyan rakhjo! Kal ka din us din se bhi jyada achchha beete aur yaadgaar rahe aisi prathna karti hoon! Jai Shri Krishna!"
....................................................
It was well past 3 am when Anupama woke up with a start.
"Anuj!"
She looked around while trying to make sense of her surroundings.
"Sapna.. Sapna tha Anupama! Kuch nahi hua hai Anuj ko!"
She dismissed that thought soon after.
"Sapna tha ya.. andesa? Kahin.. sach me unko kuch.. hua toh nahi ne? Woh toh.. wahaan par akele hain. Kuch hoga toh.. Kaise pata chalega?"
She helplessly scrolled through the contact list on her phone.
"Samar, Kinjal, GK kaka.. sab so rahe honge. Anuj?.. Kya pata, woh theek ho aur so rahe ho?"
She wiped the sweat off her forehead.
"Itna bura sapna, Kanhaji?! Woh bhi subha- subha? Mere man me kaise kaise daravne khayaal aa rahe hain! Main kisi ko bataun bhi toh kaise? Main.."
She swallowed her sobs as she walked out of the bedroom.
"Kya karu, Kanhaji? Dhyan rakhjo!"
She switched on the lamp in the mandir.
"Jab tak Anuj ko dekh nahi leti tab tak.. main toh paagal ho jaungi!"
While walking restlessly across the room, her gaze fell on the snow globe.
She caressed it softly, as though it was Anuj personified.
"Anuj.. Aap yahaan se 7 ghante ki doori par hai toh bhi mujhe aisa lag raha hai. Pata nahi aapne.. utni door, America me, 26 saal kaise nikale honge? Kitni bar aapko bure sapney aaye honge, kitni baar aapko mujhse baat karne ka man kiya hoga lekin.. Aapne kabhi koi galat kadam nahi uthaya!"
She paused to draw a breath.
"Aapke akelepan ka, majboori ka ab mujhe andaja ho raha hai.. Phir kabhi meri wajah se aapko akele nahi rehna padega!"
She turned to the other side when she heard footsteps behind her.
"Mummy.. Aap soyi nahi kya?"
"Woh.. Moti baa k liye khana banana hai ne aur tera tiphin bhi.. isiliye jaldi uth gayi. Maine dishtub kar diya tujhe. Sori beta!"
"Nahi main toh washroom jane k liye uthi thi"
"Tu ja. Main jane se pehle tujhe jaga dungi."
She switched on the kitchen lights and got busy with cooking to keep herself occupied.
