Most Bollywood actors respond in Hindi/Hinglish if the reporters are asking the question in Hindi/Hinglish.

If an actor isn't comfortable in using Hindi to express themselves since their native language isn't Hindi, it's perfectly alright. Let the reporters add subtitles to their answers or dub their replies, which is the norm in journalism.

Because some people in India think that speaking English shows they are highly educated in English medium and look down upon people speaking Hindi.

I think it is very backwards since we overturned colonialisation

Yeah, it is sad that people have an inferiority complex.

I am sorry? Salman Khan is a pan Indian megastar and icon. This guy is not even close to being a Salman Khan. I don't know in what context you said thay. But if you are talking about stardom, are you like kidding me comparing a regional star with a Salman Khan.

Because the BW stars are most of the times trying to appeal to the pan Indian audience and considering that only <50% of the population speak or understand Hindi, it makes sense for them to speak in English so that more people can understand them.

The one you are appreciating here Allu Arjun, speaks in English in almost all of his local interviews even though he was mostly addressing the Telugu speaking audience. Why? Because he knows by speaking in English he can expand his audience.

Actors don’t care if we think they are educated/posh/intelligent or not anymore than having more number of eye balls paying attention to what they were doing/saying.

Moreover, this is 2022 and we should seriously get over these silly language barriers and not give it anymore importance than a tool which helps us get around.

Actually, I have personally come across several Hindi speakers who are embarrassed to speak Hindi and pretend they can't speak Hindi to look 'cool'. The point that the OP is making about Hindi speakers is a very valid one in my experience.

Hardly anybody under 35 speaks hindi anymore in big cities, unless you're haggling a sabzi wala for a discount.

English is a universal language. Nothing wrong in speaking it. Don't look down upon it. Please. The reason this internet, this world, this forum is even functioning and flourishing right now is because of English.

When some Bollywood stars don't talk in Hindi at home and they don't even know the language well, why should they talk in Hindi in public or media? They should and will talk in English only. They can sure understand Hindi and say dialogues in movies doesn't mean they are comfortable with the language in real life. This is modern India where English is the priority everywhere be it in corporate world or any field, not ancient India where you have to speak Hindi compulsorily.
