Long ish rant coming up because I am really tired of a few things that this show is condoning.
These guys have been using elitist beauty standards time and again against Kajol's character for a while now, and I don't mean the negative characters, I mean the entire show, writing and the CVs.
Throughout the show, what I have heard is Kajol does not live up to certain beauty and style standards. Portraying this prejudice is fine- but what CVs are doing NEXT with it is what is troublesome.
Example: In one episode in the beginning, Naina says Kajol looks dull compared to Arjun, to which Kajol's well wisher Pishima's defence is "so what- she still has unique unmatched qualities", and even this kind of a statement is a problem- it is one where you still reinforce the arbitrary beauty standard and additionally creates the idea that you have to be exceptional in something else (in Kajol's case, her character and musical talent) if you do not live up to this beauty standard. This translates to the underlying idea that not meeting a certain standard is hence, dull or not attractive. What even? This sort of statement is pretty common in this show throughout, wholly unnecessary. It's also hard for me to wrap my head around this mentality because so many aspects go into making someone attractive, and it also depends from person to person.
The worst is this- Kajol HERSELF accepts this beauty standard. She herself says "I look average". The issue is not what she deems herself to look like, nor am I saying she needs to be a diva. The problem is that this whole "looking average, looking good" statements- all of these put metrics on a person's beauty and attractiveness, when really, attractiveness is SUCH a subjective thing and varies from person to person. So at least why define yourself by using such metrics, like it's some sort of a universal truth?
A better way to portray Kajol at least is to show her as someone who confidently OWNS those parts of herself which do not live up to elitist, sexist, colonial hangover types beauty standards. This show, by not doing anything about such statements, runs the risk of reinforcing prejudiced beauty standards.
However, side note- I do like that although she defines herself as average, she has never really been too bothered by the same in all the things she does.
