I don't find that unbelievable.

People make it a point to buy metal (read gold/silver) and utensils and (curiously) brooms on this day.

Everybody does that (in North India, including Mumbai).

Pretty sure they'd be buying loads of jewelry every year.

Aap Decatur chale jaana kabhi us din, pata lag jayega 😛

Exactly it's been made about buying gold, jewels etc Business walo ki chandi!!. Originally Dhanteras was about offering prayers to Goddess Lakshmi for being thankful for all the wealth in family. It marks as the final day before which one has to complete house cleaning and 1st day to put lights until Diwali. It's a custom to put Diya in front of Tulsi plant.

This is what I know people might add in.

^^^ What’s the difference between Laxmi Puja and Dhanteras, then? Do y’all celebrate both on different days?

All Hindu traditions/festivals have a very logical reason of why we celebrate it...but its true that the businessmen and politicians have hacked all our beautiful traditions/festivals.....They have commercialized/politicized every festival for their own personal gains....The younger generation grows up not knowing the real meaning of our traditions but what these businessmen and politicians want them to see..🤔

Lakshmi pooja is done on both Dhanteras and Diwali Day. On Dhanteras Goddess Lakshmi ji is welcomed in our houses. You must have seen some make footsteps of Lakhsmi ji on house entrances. Alongwith Lakshmi ji, Goddess Dhanvantari and Lord Kuber are also worshipped. And Diwali is the day we do the main Lakshmi, Ganesh and Saraswati pooja. These days because of everyone is busy.. everyone skips Dhanteras pooja and does Pooja on Diwali day itself.
