Dolly Sohi, minus
the Bhabhi look
Outofthebox

"I met my husband, Avnit Dhanoa, for the first time at a private party at J W Marriott. I still remember the date; it was October 25, 2004. Preeti Sapru, who is my close friend, introduced me to him; his mother and others were there with him too. When I returned home, I told my mother that I had met a good-looking man who is very likeable."

"Preeti had been trying to fix a match for me, but I was least interested in NRI guys. When I saw Avnit, it was love at first sight. The next morning, his mother called me and asked me about him. I told her I liked him. We got married within six months in Amritsar."

"In the serial, my character Saroj is an emotional and sacrificing woman. At times I can be like her. I am a very kind person too. But unlike Saroj, I am practical. Saroj also has a sister-in-law and mother-in-law. I can use her experiences to relate to my mother-in-law and sister-in-law."

"I don't think it is difficult to be a dutiful housewife, provided they are understanding people."

"There isn't much difference in the life of an Indian in India with an Indian living in Canada. Avnit's family lives in Victoria. I insisted that my mother-in-law should move in with us."

"The screen mother-in-law looks artificial to me, at times. She's too sweet to me. Even a mother is not so sweet to her daughter. There is no difference between the way my mother and my mother-in-law relate to me."

"On my first day in Canada, my father-in-law gifted me a shagun of Rs 20,000. He said 'Tu kitchen mein jaaye ya na jaaye, yeh tera shagun hai'. My mother-in-law suggested that I make some mithai as per custom. But I admitted that I didn't know to cook any mithai. Finally, she settled for tea."

"Since I was a newly-married bride, it was customary for friends and relatives in Canada to invite us for lunches and dinners. I don't like to wear very heavy jewellery and/ or clothes. I would dress in casuals. My mother-in-law suggested that I dress up, but I told her that I wasn't comfortable and she was fine. But hosts often commented that I didn't look like a newly-married woman and my mother-in-law would give me a 'I-told-you-so' glance. But in front of others, she would support me."

"I buy kurtis from Christina's at The Hilton Towers because my mother-in-law is fond of them. My sister-in-law, Tazmeen — we call her Tazzy — is very appreciative of the shoes and bags I select for her. We have the same shoe size and clothes size and we borrow each other's stuff all the time."

Dolly's toughest shot

"In Bhabhi, when Tilak dies, his body is brought home. My character Saroj is too stunned to react immediately. However, when she is alone in her room, she breaks down. I was required to wail aloud but I just couldn't do it to my satisfaction. I felt it was looking artificial. I took two to three retakes and I had to rely on a lot on glycerine."
Dolly's Punjabi thappad

"Recently, I was required to slap my on-screen son Mohit (Shubham). Since Shubham is very tall and I am very short, we thought we would rehearse the scene, but save the 'slap' for the final take. I forewarned Shubham to move his face away just before the slap lands on his face.

He was slow to react and got the full sting of the slap. By the time we took the second take, he didn't want a repeat of the solid Punjabi thappad and moved away in time!

In another scene, I was supposed to slap my brother-in-law, played by Rahil. Rahil confidently told me, 'You slap me as hard as possible. It will look authentic.' I asked him if he was sure, and he said he was.

When I struck him across the face, I left the marks of my fingers on his cheek. Rahil was speechless — you should have been there to see his reaction. He told me, 'I have learnt my lesson. I will never ask anybody to slap me ever again.'"
