I had an idea that composition is the music arrangement. Different composition can be done for same tune. For example, we experience modern composition of 'Rabindra Sangeet' now a days over its classical composition keeping the same tune. Very light use of instruments instead of full time use of harmonium and tabla.

The prelude, interlude and total music arrangement of a song should complement the tune. A song can result in different tastes for music composition in spite of having same tune and lyrics.

Tagging Moonandstars and Realityshow for enlightening us 😊

I am not a trained singer or musician - wish I was - if any talent I could choose- it would be singing. But I love listening to good music. Composition for me, would mean everything about the song - tune, music arrangement, mood, all the highs and lows - everything - singers then add their nuances. Quite often musicians compose a song without lyrics. And listening to music for many years now, I know that for people to listen to a song, again and again - the composition has to be good, lyrics are secondary ( Like sometimes you do enjoy a song even when you don't understand the language). Also most pure classical singers don't use lyrics.

Thanks.

Actually I can understand SamirM's confusion. Bengalis are brought up on an early diet of Rabindrasangeet (Tagore songs) and the rules are quiet the opposite with them. Lyrics are everything. They are basically poetry where words carry cerebral sensations one associates with music. For the sake of completeness composition is added, but it plays a secondary role for the listener.

Music arrangement is also very important part of the composition- which instruments to use, how much to use and where and when to use an instrument. So that gets an overall impact in a song.

These things are rather complicated. The ladies in my house are classically trained / under training while I am the illiterate. But from what I have understood before they gave up trying to explain any further, what appears to us (us = untrained listeners like me) as a tune is different from what trained musicians actually play. When they say the scale is shifted from C to A, believe it or not, the entire sargam is played using different keys on the keyboard / piano / harmonium. They will be playing different notes, but the the "tune" will sound the same to untrained ears.

The following video is an example of how the same song is played in 3 different Raagas. To somebody like me, the "tune" sounds the same but the "mood" / "emotion" is different. I felt that the Kalank title song sung by PD versus Arunita sounds different because this is the explanation - but by that time my wife had already more or less banned me from discussing Indian Idol with her so I haven't been able to verify😆

Thanks again. Well explained.

But imagine our quandary 😃

Here is a Kishore song on Tagore lyrics in a Ray film that has no music 😊

Basically, an excuse to post a song I like very much for the words and the skill :)

Which one to look for out of the full album? will listen to the full album later, of course, but which one to hear now?

Oh! Sorry, just the 1st song! " Bidhir Bandhan Katbe Tumi". That is the one I wanted to share. Did not even notice that it had other songs.
