Hi Stuti. I am back again to read this tremendous work of yours after a fairly long time of missing out on the last 2 chapters that you have posted.
Chapter 57
So true to her words Salima arranged the boat ride for our royal couple. I loved how you described the whole setting with these small-small details. It adds on well to the whole picture and that even so beautifully. Salima teasing both Jalal and Jodha was fun. If she was not married to Jalal, I would have surely liked her as the elder sister or maybe even as a bhabhi of Jalal, helping him out in his love life.
Both Jalal and Jodha are excited about the boat ride and seems like are meeting each other after almost a week. The extra efforts they put in their dressing, Jalal leaving behind his guards... all explain their anticipation for spending some private time together. And we get a glimpse of caring, possessive and romantic Jalal all together during the ride. The way you described the nature and river, for a second I thought I was witnessing it all. Their kiss, their dreams and fantasies of togetherness and their confession are all adorable, romantic as well as elegant. I just loved it.
But for me, the highlight was Abdul and Moti. Abdul's plight and seeking refuge which he, for now, temporarily find in the company of the beautiful lady. I was so looking forward to this. The way Moti can relate to Abdul and his loss seems like a perfect start of something between them if there would be something. He will finally get someone to understand him and not pity him.
Now the story is moving forward. It would be interesting to read how Jalal handles this communal unrest and the conspirators behind it while still maintaining harmony amongst his subjects and local administrators who are used as pawns against the state. Jodha's dilemmas about religious differences are justified and seem like she is gonna play an important role in this situation of crisis.
Haven't read chapter 58 yet. I Will comment after reading.
Chapter 58
First, thanks for such a long chapter. It incorporated many things happening simultaneously which should be discussed separately I suppose.
Starting with Jalal, I can see character growth here. He is learning from his past experiences and evolving as an Emperor. Knowing the influence of aristocracy and priests in politics, he is not openly going against the suspects as he has no proofs. The mistakes he made in the case of Bairam Khan had taught him well and doesn't want to allow higher officials to turn against him openly. But at the same time, he is not the one to bow down. Sending Jodha for this small political expedition veiled in the form of a personal trip shows his capabilities as a good administrator. This also stands true to the historical facts as royal women did play a role to strengthen the sovereignty of the emperor, though I am not sure whether they took such trips but they were important when it came to political diplomacy and solving issues with other states through peaceful negotiations. This was a real masterstroke Stuti and the reason why I love your fanfictions so much. This also made Jodha see the strategic side of Jalal. For now, Emperor is facing two prime issues, one, solving the mystery behind the assassination attempt and second, this communal conspiracy. Let's see what happens next. I am excited to read further.
Coming to Jodha, now that all is fine between her and Jalal and she had established her place in the harem, she is unnecessarily dragged into politics. Well, She might not want this, but I did. How else does Jalal will realise the hidden talents of our Begum Sahiba? (Wink) Jokes apart, I think she also realises somewhere that why she is continuously targeted. She has to face these challenges at the same time fulfil the responsibility that Jalal has bestowed upon her. I loved her monologue about her being a weakness or a weapon of the Emperor and the way she gave a whole new perspective to the scenario of rebellion was important for Jalal to understand the deep-rooted problem and find its solution. The feisty strong Jodha is always a treat to read but this chapter also gave us a compassionate Jodha who does not hesitate even from bending for the right cause.
However, sending away Jodha for the trip would also mean distancing Jodha and Jalal. Hope the trip ends soon they don't have to stay apart for long. Coming to which, thank god this time it did not take them weeks to meet each other again. I loved their walk together, their yearning to spend time with each other. And of course the naughty as well as embarrassed Jalal.
I have always loved the sassy and sarcastic Ruqaiya before she was turned into a jealous antagonist. By this portrayal of her, you are allowing me to cherish her again. The way she held herself as a dignified Queen is what was missing in the serial. The way relation between her and Jodha is developing is amazing. They might not be friends, yet they have a sort of understanding to respect each other which I think stems from their devotion towards their Emperor. And I am truly loving this. This portrayal of her is exactly what I had strived for in the serial. How her character develops further is upon you but for now I am loving her.
Coming to the conspirators as you have already specified it's Adham and Khwaza Moin. While Adham was absent in this chapter, might be trying to remain low-key after the failed attempt of assassination, Khwaja Moin made an appearance, clearly desperate to divert Emperor's attention and trying to assert his authority as a King-maker. But it did not deter Jalal. But what is Maham's role in all this? Is she involved with Khwaza Moin or just trying to gain from the circumstances? For I think she was the one to influence Gauhar to plant the necklace. Looking forward to reading about this further.
However, for me, the best part of the chapter was the chaos in the temple and how you showcased the whole rebellion like situation. It was so thrilling to read that part, especially Jodha and her attendants trying to mediate but failing. At one point, I truly feared for all of their lives. Though you had drawn a parallel here between the outside and inside situation. I think it also makes it clear to the readers how tense the situation is.
Loved the chapter. Waiting for the next one.
P.s.- There is a new series coming on Disney+Hotstar called The Empire based on Alex Rutherford's novel- Empire of the Moghul. If you have time do watch it. Though typically dramatic, it seems to stick to the historical facts.
