Not really. She was good.

Lack of expressions coz Raji was a Guerrilla trained soldier. She became like that. A person with almost no emotion. Her body posture reflected the same. Even while narrating her story to Srikant, Raji had blank face and dead voice. That’s why Srikant says to Milind that you won’t get anything out of Raji as she has become an animal. And no amount of torture would break her.

The only time she showed emotions, once was when her job boss was hitting her coz that reminded her of the assault she had been through and 2nd time when Sri (Manoj Bajpayee) says that her boss (Bhaskaran) was just using them and he was no Thalaivar. She was furious coz Bhaskaran saved her and gave her purpose. She would literally do anything for Thalaivar.
When she heard the news of Bhaskaran’s brother Subbu dying in the attack, she was about to kill herself but Selva’s phone call stops her. Being part of Bhaskaran’s Liberation Army was her identity, her life purpose, her existence. I think Samantha conveyed all of these amazingly.

And please no comparison to that loser Moosa. I felt nothing for that guy. I loathed him. Whereas for Raji, I could see why she become what she was. I felt bad for her.

Regarding her fame: I'm sure she is much more popular across the whole of India than many of her Bollywood counterparts... but I was talking strictly in terms of Bollywood audiences: they just don' know her, largely. They are more likely to recognise Tripti who was a much talked about debut of 2020.

But sorry Tripti koi bhi angle se Samantha se compete nahi kar sakti in terms of popularity.

You do realise a large chunk of Hindi speaking audience watches South Indian dubbed movies, and it isn't just limited to certain demographic or age group. And Samantha has appeared in some of the most by viewed and adored movies. Tripti hain kaun, Netflix ke ek chote se movie, jo sirf cinephiles aur social media ke Netflix walo ne hi dekha hain.

If Bulbul was something as ragging as say Sacred Games or Mirzapur, tabhi your point would have made logic but Bulbul is a fringe movie.

Exactly, a character who is basically dead man walking, usse Madhubala wali expressions ka expectations rakhna is so silly.

Character is like tat , tat means it reached n she passed 😆

Nuanced portrayals ( played by actors with a strong screen presence) : tabu in Chandni bar, hrithik and bacchan snr in agneepath, bacchan snr in dewar, urmila in ek haseena thi (jail and aftermath)

Portrayal alternating between sad face and angry face : mrs akkineni
The character felt flat to me, lacking depth…
