I don't know why, but this song feels like a lullaby for adults to me. Has a very calming and soothing effect. Love the tune of the second stanza even more.
Beautiful song, and you're right it almost feels like a lullaby, and if I close my eyes I can feel the 'majhi' rowing me across in a tiny boat on a river with the wind in my face and the sun in my eyes and the gentle splash of the oars as they push through the water. RDB's voice adds to that feeling, it has a faraway sound to it, exactly like a rustic boatman would sound!
It's strange though, his dad, Burmanda's voice also has a uniquely rustic quality to it, like I've remarked before, but still father and son are different. Burmanda's voice is more piercing, sharper, and full-bodied while RDB I think is softer.
The perfect time to talk about the song you posted, Mousy - 'Mere Saajan hai uss paar'.
What do I say about SDB? The man is talent personified. I feel sad that he's not as praised or even as talked about as his son, who of course, is also undeniably talented - but he had an able teacher!
Bandini, as you've rightly said, has some excellent songs!
Mora gora ang lai le was Gulzar's first song as a lyricist and we all know what heights of fame and creativity he reached, and is still going strong! It's such a sweet, simple, hummable tune with a folksy element that Burmanda excelled in. Jogi jabse tu aaya mere dwaare is yet another example. Listen to the antara and you'll be amazed at how complex it is!
'O panchhi pyare' and 'Ab ke baras bhejo' are two of my favorites, and I love that he used Asha for these.
And O jaanewale is a plaintive plea in Mukesh's mellifluous voice that rings and echoes in your ears. Especially the antara gives me goosebumps. Like another Mukesh- SDB song that is also a background one and never fails to make me cry -
Chal ri Sajni ab kya soche

The lyrics by Majrooh pierce the heart like sharp arrows, especially
'Babul pachtayye haathon ko mal ke, kaahe diya pardes tukde ko dil ke'
and 'koi nahi apna kaisi ghadi hai'
You're right, Mousy, it's hard to pick a favorite in Bandini but Burmanda kind of steals the thunder with 'Mere Saajan hai uss paar'.
I have waxed eloquent earlier about 'Wahan kaun hai tera' - my absolute favorite Burmanda song in his voice, but this one comes close as does yet another from Sujata - 'Sun mere Bandhu re'
It seems Burmanda recorded the song with many established singers at the time but was dissatisfied at the effect - he wanted a slightly rustic quality to it, he wanted it to sound like an untrained singer singing it casually, the lack of finesse needed to be obvious in the singer's voice since it was going to be sung by a 'majhi' in the movie. And I think he achieved it brilliantly in his own voice!
Just listen to the effect of the music and the sound of the water splashing- it sounds faraway, with an echo-like feeling, his voice perfectly echoing the feelings of Sujata and Adhir. Such a beautiful song!❤️
