Ikr? Bharat Bhushan par itne khoobsoorat gaane filmaye gaye hain! Such a waste! 😛

Madhubala ke chehre se nazar hee nahi hat ti! She's stunning! He's a lucky fellow indeed! 😛

He got so many good roles and in many historicals. No great screen persona. And his acting skills were at best mediocre. Just one of those actors I guess who was lucky to be in the right place at the right time!

Lovely song, Mousy.

Roshan was such a gifted composer. IMO, he's responsible for popularizing qawwalis in Hindi film music, being the man behind what I call the 'baap' of all qawwalis - 'Na toh karvaan ki talaash hai' which I think encompasses the essence of the qawwali to a T - the back and forth, the differing points of view and the competitive element in the form of 'nok jhok'. Such a brilliant song, made even more brilliant by Sahir's lyrics. This song and 'Hum bhi dekhenge" from Mughal-e-Azam I think are textbook qawwalis.

Here's yet another Roshan - Sahir qawwali that I love. This does not have the back and forth, just extols the virtues of love and all its trappings. Beautiful song in raag Yaman and so beautifully sung by Asha B.

I remember watching an online tutorial on Hindustani classical ragas on Youtube and the host used this song and the sargam 'Ni re ga" saying if you can spot this Sargam in any song, it's Raag Yaman. And Asha actually starts and ends with this sargam in the string of sargams she sings. So good!❤️

Nighein milane ko jee chahta hai...

Dil-o-jaan lutane ko jee chahta hai

Jis ghadi meri nigahon ko teri deed huyi

Woh ghadi mere liye aish ki tamheed huyi

Jab kabhi maine tera chand sa chehra dekha

Eid ho ya ke na ho mere liye eid huyi (so brilliantly said! Sahir is unbelievable! - this is among my top favorite lines in a Hindi song ever!)

ETA: One of the YouTube comments mentions that this was Saroj Khan's first song as choreographer at 13! 😲 I have no idea if this is true, can anyone confirm?

Madari (1959), Lyrics: Faruqh Kaiser, Music: Kalyanji Anandji

Another timeless classic song with “been” music. wonderfully sung by Mukesh and Lata.

Riya, you are right about Saroj khan's first song.

Saroj Khan learned to dance while working under film choreographer B. Sohanlal, whom she married at the age of 13 while he was 43 years and was already married with 4 children which she did not know at the time of marriage. Saroj Khan had revealed in an interview, "I choreographed my first song ‘Nigahein Milane Ko Jee Chahta Hai' from Dil Hi Toh Hai, when I was 14. It was picturized on Nutan. PL Santoshi taught me how to join movements and make them dance steps."

OMG! Thanks for verifying the information, Mousy! I'm shocked. This is pedophilia! 😭 How could this happen? Did she not have any guardians to look after her? How was the marriage even legal?

Shocking!

'Dil lootne wale jadugar' is a lovely song, especially that trademark 'been' sound that is imprinted in my head.

Similar to this one from Naagin.

Here are a few interesting facts about Saroj Khan >>> Vyjayanthimala.

A lesser-known fact remains that she is the one who choreographed the song Hooton pe aisi baat, which she presented to Vyjayanthimala on the sets of Jewel Thief. Saroj Ji told to her interviewer this story, and that how Vyjayanthimala then said that she would take a week to do the song.

Vaijanthimala became irritated with masterji (B Sohenlal) for making a child train her.

"Hotho Mein Aisi Baat, Mein Dabaa Ke Chali Ayee" is one of the best dance sequences in Indian Cinema. This is from Dev Anand's classic Jewel Thief(1967). That was the time when actresses were actually trained (long term!) in dance. Vyjantimala, of course, was the best of the best.

Vijay Anand worked with Vyjantimala for the first time. She was a Super Star at that time. There were some date problems and many distractions but Vyjayantimala being the professional that she was, still came up with a polished performance. Goldie's only grievance was that she could have done better with Hoton Pe Aisi Baat. He wanted her to rehearse the number before we went for a final take. But she told me airily that she didn't need any rehearsals. he insisted she did, but she still didn't report for rehearsals and came straight to the set. he called for "pack-up" and told her firmly that she had to stay back in the studio and practise with the assistants. She did practise, for 15 minutes. Then she got into her car and drove off saying that Saroj Khan would be coming to her place later and they'd go over the steps together. The rehearsal never happened but Vyjayantimala being a good actress and an excellent dancer didn't find it too difficult to pick up the steps and the shots were okayed quickly. So if you see a single camera capture of Vyjantimala’s magic, it was ACTUALLY done in a single shot!!!

A review -- 'Hothon Pe Aisi Baat' from Jewel Thief (1967) This Dev Anand classic was an instant hit at the box office. An interesting thought little known fact about the 'Hothon Pe Aisi Baat' number is that it was shot in one take. Sung by the distinguished Lata Mangeshkar and composed by SD Burman, the song was picturised on Vyjayanthimala, who swayed and sizzled all through it.

Well, there's no doubt about Vyjayantimala's prowess! She was a consummate dancer. Still, stars have huge egos, that could use a bit of toning down especially when it comes to professionalism.

Shot in one take! 👏And Vyjayantimala did sway and sizzle through it! ❤️ I wonder if the so-called great dancers of today can do this?
