What a song!!!
one of the best songs of Mukesh.
"Iss kī sab ko pahchān nahīṅ
ye do din kā mehmān nahīṅ
muśhkil hai bahot āsān nahīṅ ye
pyār bhūlānā bachapan kā
Milkar roye, fariyād kare
un beete dinoṅ kī yād kare
ae kāśh kahīṅ, mil jāye koī jo
meet purānā bachapan kā"

"Ghayal man ka pagal panchi udne ko bekaraar
Pankh hai komal, aankh hai dhundli, jaana hai saagar paar
Ab tu hi isse samjha, raah bhule the kahaan se ham"
"idhar jhumke gaaye zindagi, udhar hai maut khadi
koi kya jaane kaha hai seema, uljhan aan padi
kaano me zara keh de, ke aaye kaun disha se hum"

Composer Hemant Kumar used Raga Yaman. This raga, along with Pahadi and Bhairavi, is one of the most used ragas in Hindi films.
Woh shaam’ starts with the sound of waves lapping against the stern of a wooden boat on the Hooghly. The hum of the chorus that follows Kishore Kumar’s first two metre-less lines is almost choir-like in its pitch and cadence. Hemant uses Pa as the first note of the song, thereby creating the impression of a high-pitched number to merge with the backdrop the Hooghly provides. The mukhra radiates great warmth and gently leads to the interlude where Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia plays a poignant piece from the flute just before the two antaras.
Hemant’s Rabindra Sangeet style is reflected in the antara, where the first two lines sound deliberately bland as compared to the haunting mukhra. The string fillers also do not stray beyond the traditional mode. However, the monotony is broken in the third line, by the jhankar of notes that use a combination of Dha Ni Sa Pa! The notes are articulated with such finesse by Kishore Kumar that they create a sense of longing.
Gulzar's lyrics take the listener from ‘Mera khayal hai abhi’ to ‘Main sochta tha’. ‘Main sochta tha mera naam’ in the first antara becomes ‘Mai jaanta hoon mera naam’ in the second as Radha vacillates between the past and the present. A beautiful song .

There's something so tranquil, so serene in Mannada's voice, it makes you want to weep at the sheer devotion and the plaintive lyrics.
The panchhi is of course the metaphor for Seema (Nutan) who's trying to run away from the reform home of which Balraj Sahni's the head. So beautifully sung and composed and written! 😭
Among my favorite Shankar- Jaikishen songs. It's very unlike their style so a lot of times I forget Seema is SJ. Like Patita. It's a very unique SJ soundtrack.
Here's another song from Seema that I love - Man Mohana bade jhoote. It's beautifully sung by Lata and Nutan lip-syncs to it so perfectly you cannot tell if it's Lata or Nutan singing. Right down to the movement of her throat. Lata is said to have commented on that too saying it helped that Nutan was a singer herself and therefore understood the nuances of singing. Amazing composition in Raag Jayjaywanti - one the most well-known songs in this raag I think.
I had to add this song from Shola aur Shabnam! It's among my favorite Rafi songs, and the music by Khayyam and lyrics by Kaifi Azmi are outstanding!
I remember Dharmendra being asked in an interview who his favorite playback singer(who had sung for him) was, and he had said Rafi and when asked to name a song of his that was his favorite he picked this one.
Jaane kya dhoondti rehti hai ye aankhein mujhme
Rakh ke dher mein shola hai na chingaari hai
The cadence in Rafi's tone is simply marvellous. No words to describe it. Just listen to the high notes he hits in the last stanza. Just stunning, as only Rafi can do! 😭
Aarzoo jurm, wafa jurm, tamanna hai gunaah
ye woh duniya hai jahan pyaar nahi ho sakta
kaise baazaar ka dastur tumhe samjhaoon
Bik gaya jo woh kharidaar nahi ho sakta 😭👏
Such powerful lyrics! Such astounding singing!
Where are the days of such music, such singing, such lyrics gone? 😭
The leading lady is Tarla Mehta, sister of Dina Pathak, who's Supriya and Ratna Pathak's mom.
