I was going through the list of films, which were highest grossers at the box office worldwide at the time of release on Wikipedia. It is like this :
The Birth Of A Nation released in 1915, and went on to become the highest grossing film of all time, breaking the record of a previous unknown film.
This record was broken by Gone With The Wind which released in 1939.
The Sound Of Music which released in 1965 broke the record of Gone With The Wind.
Gone With The Wind again got the title of Highest grossing film in 1971 through a rerelease.
Finally a new film The Godfather which released next year in 1972 broke its record.
Then came Jaws in 1975 which broke the record of The Godfather and started the trend of summer blockbusters.
Star Wars released in 1977, broke the record of Jaws and continued the trend of summer blockbusters dominating the box office.
E.T. The Extra Terrestrial which again was a summer blockbuster released in 1982 and broke the record of Star Wars.
Summer blockbusters continued topping at the box office with Jurassic Park, which released in 1993 and finally broke the record of E.T. after 11 years.
4 years later Titanic released in 1997 and became the highest grossing film of all time beating Jurassic Park. This was the first time since The Godfather, that a film which is not a summer blockbuster topped the box office.
Avatar released in 2009 and broke the record of Titanic after 12 years, which again was not a summer blockbuster.
Avengers: Endgame released in 2019 finally brought back the glory of summer blockbusters, by becoming the highest grossing film of all time beating Avatar.
Although it's another thing that this record only stayed for two years, as Avatar again got the top spot through a rerelease in China.
When you look at how these films did at the Oscars, you see that none of the summer blockbusters won the Best Picture award, although almost all were nominated barring Jurassic Park and Avengers: Endgame.
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest won the Best Picture over Jaws in 1976.
Annie Hall won the Best Picture over Star Wars in 1978.
Gandhi won the Best Picture over E.T. The Extra Terrestrial in 1983.
Schinder's List won the Best Picture in 1994 over Jurassic Park which wasn't even nominated.
Finally everyone remembers that Parasite won the Best Picture over Avengers: Endgame in 2020, which again wasn't nominated.
Now I'm not saying that a film which is the highest grossing film at the box office is also supposed to be the best film.
But when you look at the how the films which weren't summer blockbusters and still went on to become the highest grossing films of all time did at the Academy awards then :
Gone With The Wind won Best Picture.
The Sound Of Music won Best Picture.
The Godfather won Best Picture,
and Titanic also won Best Picture.
The only films which topped the box office and weren't summer blockbusters, but still didn't win the award were The Birth Of A Nation (because Oscars didn't exist when this film released), and Avatar (although it still got a nomination but lost to The Hurt Locker).
So, do you think Gone With The Wind, The Sound Of Music, The Godfather and Titanic were truly the best films of their respective year to win Best Picture award?
or do you think there were better films which were snubbed?
Were the summer blockbusters snubbed at the awards?
Why almost every film which is not a summer blockbuster in the above list won Best Picture, while non of those films in that genre won the award?
