Prologue
She woke up, her vision groggy but her mind surprisingly clear. It had taken her two days — or maybe two years? — but today she had finally acknowledged what a mess her life was. As she stood on the doorstep and fired off words of retort to her aai and kaku, she realised there had always been this insurmountable gap between her and the family she had considered her own. Deep down, she had always felt it in her heart... it was the gap between a bahu and beti, a gap she had desperately strived to fulfill. She'd always ignored it — because what difference did it make, really, as long as her family loved her? But today, it felt to her like the difference between a fire and its ashes. How similar they were, rising from the same spark... but where the fire was full of life, the ashes were a dull remnant of what could have been.
The fire... the havankund she had taken her pheres around. The pandit had been rattling off oaths that she was to take for her husband, but she couldn't care less. He was no husband of hers, and she would definitely be no wife. But the holy fire was to be respected, and despite herself, her heart had searched for any promise she could think to make. Make amends with her family? She wasn't interested anymore. Destroying Raghav Rao? That pathetic man didn't deserve such attention.
Ultimately, she had ended up making promises to herself. To give herself the respect she deserved, to give herself the life she deserved. To break free of all the shackles that kept her caged. To live every moment for herself. Her life was all ashes now, but she would get the fire blazing again. She would dream again, and she would fly high to achieve them.
Main vachan leti hoon.
