I think you are reading too much into it the name change. Newer characters latching on to a successful standalone movie is nothing new with MCU. They have followed this template since the beginning.
Iron Man 2 had black widow being introduced
Captain America 3 was a full on avengers lite movie
Thor Ragnarok had Hulk in equal parts and introduced Valkyrie
Wasp shared the accolades in Ant Man 2 (also the name was added in the movie title)
Ms. Marvel will have her standalone series, so they are not going to waste time with her origin in The Marvels.
So this just seems like another movie by MCU to expand the second movie and kickstart their Phase 4 with a bang, post Black Widow.
Brie is going to run the show in the Marvels - that much is clear
Regarding the sexist fanboys - ignore those trolls. They are idiots and would find things to complain and criticise even if this move fits their sexist agenda
The difference in your examples is that none of the superheroes had their name removed from the title.
Iron Man 2 was still an Iron Man movie despite Black Widow and War Machine being in it.
Civil War was still a part Captain America's trilogy despite having all the Avengers in it.
Same with Thor: Ragnarok being part of Thor trilogy despite it also having Hulk and Valkyrie.
Here they removed Captain Marvel's name from the title, and I think this is done to please the sexist fanboys who were going to hate this movie even before release.
