Veer Zaara is a poignant movie but Preity's performance was nothing special tbh
And, as much as I loved Aishwarya's subtle performance in Jodhaa Akbar, Priyanka's performance overshadowed hers like nothing. She exploded with Fashion đ€©

I think Rani deserved it for Hum Tum and Priyanka for Fashion. However, both Preity and Ash have had other performances that were stronger, in which they should've got more recognition for.
I still think Kya Kehna is one of Preity's best. I also liked her in Sangharsh, Dil Hai Tumhaara. I
Ash's performance in Raincoat is disgustingly underrated that it hurts. She should've won for that and the National award for it too. She was also good in Hamara Dil Aapke Pass Hai, Chokar Bali...and she never really got her due for Khakee, Shabd, Umrao Jaan, Provoked, Guzarish - which IMO were extremely strong performances.
Rani's performance in Veer Zara was much better than Preity's.
I liked Priyanka in fashion more it was a woman centric film and the role was really meaty and had a nice arc
Cos their performance were below average
Rani deserved to win for Hum Tum over Preity because her performance was much stronger in that movie.
As for Aish...she was no where near close to how strong Priyanka performed in Fashion. Priyanka was the most deserving winner that year. If for some weird reason she hadn't won, THEN the second most deserving would've been Asin for Ghajini.

10,000% disagree with that man on the radio.
I think there should be much more awards. There are so many good performances in a whole year, and for only 1 person to win is so bland. Bring on some more categories.
I was campaigning for Filmfare to introduce Best Breakthrough award, because every year there are some wonderful performances which are left outside of the Leading/Supporting category but are as award-worthy if not more than a "Debut" performance award. And I'm talking specifically about an actress or actor's 2nd/3rd/4th film role. There are so many examples when someone like Vicky Kaushal or Rani Mukerji made far far bigger impacts with the follow-ups to their debut.
