For me, it's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Corny as hell, yes. Dripping with cheese, yes. But heart also. And that iconic chemistry between the leads, and Rani's terrific performance, and Salman's cameo just adds up to make a magical combo❤️
🤣🤣 All his movies make me wonder what drug were they on while creating this but K3G. Still cheesy, cringeworthy and illogical but a little less than the other ones.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hain...
Yes, the characters are ek se badhkar ek nonsensical and dumb at times 😆
But boy, the emotions really hit you when they do. No matter how many times I watch the movie, seeing Anjali breakdown in the rain in Tujhe Yaad Na meri ayi or Rahul's tearful confession at rooftop during the climax will never NOT make me cry 😭
I know it's considered cool to dump on KKHH and weirdly enough, Karan himself disses it, but I think it's his best film. Yes it's a bit Archie/Betty/Veronica meets Sleepless in Seattle but there is a sweetness at the heart of the film.
Everybody empathizes with Anjali being passed over for the hot girl, everyone can feel little Anjali's pain at not being with her mom and even Rahul's confusion and regret at not seeing what was under his nose all along strikes a chord. Salman's cameo was excellently done and it made the film. I was little but I still remember the hooting in the hall at his entry.
All in all, it is Karan's best. After that he has floundered and tried very hard to be cool...taking Imtiaz's Rockstar idea for Ae Dil and using Forrest Gump for MNIK but KKHH is his purest film. I can watch it anytime. Is it perfect? No. But it's 100% him.

Problem with KKHH is not that Anjali got dumped for the hot girl.
Problem is that Rahul only wanted her after she became hot acc to BW standards and he saw she had boobs.
If she'd been shown not changing herself to suit societal preconceptions, and he was shown as having grown emotionally, it would've been a good film.
Or at least if she called him out on it. Or maybe even had ONE SINGLE SCENE where she dressed like she had before, and he remained in love.

True, but a lot of 80s and 90s films when seen in retrospect have these sexist problematic elements. This makeover trope is literally THE plotline of every romcom ever made.
So while I totally agree with your point, I still give KKHH a pass. This is a flaw and a bit sad to show the tomboy being passed over, but the film and its players in its entirety do make up for it. In the second half, they tried to show it as Anjali maturing and coming into her own, although yes it was not so well done and made it seem like she's changing her personality for a guy.
Not a perfect film by any means but it still holds up. Cant say the same for any of his films. K3G is one gag reel after another- you take Poo out of the film and you realise it doesn't really have a plotline and it's kinda depressing in places. Insulting your adopted son and calling him not of your blood because you don't like his girlfriend is faaaaaaar more toxic than a 21-year-old choosing hotness over personality (the latter is not right either but you can do sh*t like this sometimes when you're young and superficial). Just my 2 cents.
