Why? Samsung is an Indian brand?
Anyway I am not a desh bhakt thankfully so I don't have that problem.

I tried almost all top branded phones but nothing like Iphone. If you want to save some money look into the older models - not much difference functionality wise and you can save a considerable amount of money!
Samsung is a Korean brand.
Why?

Depends on what you use it for. Do you need more space or expandable space? Better camera? More functions? Cloud function? Faster for Gaming? Watching movies? Work related apps?
I'm not a huge phone fanatic. My older model Moto G5 Plus does what I need it to do - Expandable memory (32+ current 128 card) that lets me store audio books and music, let's me listen to FM radio without using data, takes a decent enough photo to catch a moment or let me online bank (I'd rather use my camera for important photos), screen good enough to read a book on when I don't have my tablet, watch YT videos (I could watch movies on it but don't have much desire to watch a film on that small a space), fine phone organization and easy to load and use work related apps (would much rather a use a computer for that though). I got the Amazon version (easy to ignore the Amazon stuff) on Ebay for under $40 a year or so ago - unlocked. So yeah, not a phone fanatic.

I don't play games but I do multi-task, going back and forth between at least 10 different apps. Lower end phones do not handle that well. That's why I need a phone which has a decent processor that can handle my usage.
Apart from that, I need a good camera and battery life.
That's all, really.
But I have decided not to spend more than Rs.20k/$300 on my phone this time. Last time I bought the Pixel at 60k and, while it was definitely a good phone, I do not need such a high-end phone.
I am surprised you got a phone for $40 dollars and that it has been serving you well. I doubt I can get a decent phone that dirt cheap in India.

Phone originally retailed at $250+ when it came out - and even then was considered a "cheap" phone. But it's better than a couple of Samsungs I had before which did everything great except the thing I needed it most for - good sound quality on phone calls.
I got it for a steal because it was 1) a return 2) an Amazon software infected model 3) almost a 2 yrs old model at that point. Even then it was a great deal because others were selling at almost 3x as much used at that time.
As pointed out above - sometimes the best deal is buying a slightly older model. There usually aren't that many substantial upgrades in a model over 1-2 years but every time they do there are a bunch of people ready to sell their own phone for the prestige of an upgrade. There also older stock that has to be moved. Ebay is flooded with older phones.
