Jordan’s competition
“That’s fine I cant go anyway” Naina smiled non apologetically
“They were eager to see my room and such”
“Oh so like the ultra wealthy you and him sleep in separate rooms?” Naina asked shocked
“Oh no, no… just I meant the rooms I use in the Parashar home” Viveka blushed indicating the guy and her have no intimacy issues
“I am happy you even cared to talk to me” Naina nodded
“shaheed mat bano Naina, kyon nahi karoongi tumse baat”
Naina was visibly angry
“Shaheed to tum ban sakti ho Veev, everyone is ready to simp for you, even if I have a legit problem our family disses it”
“You think Papa hates you? Or Ma hates you?” “Ma has been working to get you some Swedish thing” Viveka consulted her phone “Nordic Design Institute” she read
Naina’s eyes sparkled for a second and she quickly hid her joy
“Parents care for you Naina” “European courses are so expensive Ma ne ek second nahi socha”
“You are teaching me to have gratitude?”
“Kyon nahi?” Viveka looked her straight in the eye
“I don’t need it Veev” Naina was hurt
“I didn’t waste my parents money, neither did you, as a sister why cant I appreciate our parents yaar?”
“Your tone sounds like YOU are funding it” Naina grumbled waving a hand
“Nahi yaar, I am broke as always” Viveka smiled
“Must be nice to feel broke after marrying into the Top 100 families in India”
“I don’t ask him for money, he doesn’t give me a “retainer” ya jo bhi bolte hain raees, I don’t claim any entitlement Naina. I married him… him…. Umm” Viveka stopped
She really didn’t feel like revealing why she agreed to marry Raanav
It was too personal
She didn’t trust Naina this second, maybe tomorrow, may be the weekend, but not right now… Satyen barely out of the hospital it would be greatly risky to say anything
She instead turned a guilty red
“What is the use of marrying a rich man then?” Naina laughed
Viveka burst out laughing too at Naina’s naivete
“Pagal ho tum” she laughed
Naina’s expression softened, as it seemed like they were almost at the edge of the old familiarity and warmth
Just millimeters away from everything being OK
“Does he hurt you about being middle class?” Naina ruined it!
Viveka stared at her intensely wondering if saying YES would make Naina happy or saying NO would make her sad
“Nahi Naina” she said softly looking straight at Naina
“Ah… so for now dude is OK with us gareeb” Naina laughed
“I guess” Viveka looked down at her mug
“I am happy, I wouldn’t want you to feel inferior Veev” Naina choked up
Viveka nodded as tears filled her eyes also
“I have to go take notes by listening to a lecture” “At 2 PM” Viveka said gently
She was afraid Naina would be hurt by her saying she had a “purpose”
“I have to go too”
They gave each other awkward hugs
A man ruins everything they say, and it was true in their case
They walked down together to the street parking as the garage was full
Viveka was still in her silk cotton sarees and sexy but bright blouses, chignon wrapped/tied with multi colored silk ropes with pompoms at the end
Naina dressed elegantly in high fashion
Viveka walked towards Rathiji, he pointed to the gleaming silver Merc
Naina watched that and paused
“I have to go this way” she said
“Kaha ja rahi ho”
“No don’t worry” Naina nodded and smiled and started walking in the opposite direction
Watched Naina cross the road
She didn’t want to flex by giving Naina a ride, in fact there was no one she really had an ego clash with in her life, so her new/now elevated social status could help win a battle.
She sat in the back as was instructed by Rathiji in the morning and closed her eyes and cried softly
He watched her through the rear view mirror and did not utter a word
He would after bringing her home, go off to pick up Raanav from a biz apptt in Gurgaon at 6 PM, he would be asked if he had driven the new Mrs Parashar
He would say yes, and tell him he took her to JNU first then to Saket Mall and then back to JNU and back to her parents at Rohini at 4 PM
He would hesitate and eventually tell Raanav that his new wife was weeping in the back after meeting that someone at the mall
Raanav would ask him who it was, Rathiji would tell him, “Dono behnen hain shaayad”
It was not a normal wedding so very few staff members formally met the Mathurs on Dec 12
Raanav didn’t need to know more, he would ask to be dropped off at Rohini
Akash opened the door
“Welcome welcome” “ANOOOOO Dekho kaun aaya hai”
Anu and Viveka were in Anu’s balcony sipping chai, and sheeling peas
Mainly to avoid a prowling Dadi
Dadu had been diagnosed with a irregular heart beat, so it had to be checked out so they were not going back any time soon
Bua was coming over for dinner
Dadi harassed her son in the living room, the twins flit in and out of the apartment to go buy momos at the food truck outside the society gate
“Dadi was encouraging Chachi to grab all the toiletries from every room” Ma whispered
“I saw Devanshu flying out of the bride’s room with his pockets full, looks like he took his job too seriously” Viveka gasped trying to stop laughing
“I made him return everything” Anu said viciously
“Bua ko kaha?” Viveka yawned and pushed her glasses up with a Uff!
“Baad mein kaha, Dilli aakar” Anu said softly
“they both gang up on u so much you have never encouraged kleptomaniac behaviors” Viveka smiled
“Yaad hai tumhe when you were 10 u brought home your friend’s US ka koi charm bracelet?”
“Yeah and I lied to you that she gave it to me” Viveka laughed
“Itni maar padi tumhe” Anu reminisced
Viveka nodded
“dadi ko to nahi kaha na tumne kabhi?” Anu worried
She didn’t want any umm.. not so pretty news about her kids getting out
“U are paranoid Ma” Viveka smiled “20 saal pehle ki baat hai” she yawned again
“Ek nap le lo, Papa chhod aayenge tumhe” Anu offered
Viveka blushed, she didn’t want her mother to find out she was tired, too embarrassing
“I am trying to be Dr Ansari’s woman Friday”
“Achha achha” Anu nodded staidly
Her phone buzzed
Karuna had picked up paneer from the Mother Dairy and the twins were headed home
The mother daughter duo was getting some good laughs, though wicked, it helped release some tension
Viveka didn’t say anything about meeting Naina, she yawned again
“Ek matar paneer ho gaya, Papa ne YT mein koi daal dekhi hai” anu began to laugh
“U are SO mean, let him”
“Arey he is saying it doesn’t have to be pressure cooked, pressure cooking se already Dadi farts all day, agar kachi dal khila di”
“dadu farts too”
“Oh THAT’S what u got out of this?”
They both rolled on the swing falling over each other laughing
“Papa has to get preapproved for Dadu’s surgery right?” Viveka asked sitting up
Anu straightened the tiny tear drop diamond on her daughter’s mangal sutra
It was lightweight and almost microscopic around her neck
She realized she must have worn it today because she was headed here to Rohini
Anu would tell Akash later at night but she was beyond happy Viveka was married now
Years until 30 it was agony of being a “beti ki Ma” and BOOM within a week daughter was married
“ANOOOOO” Akash hollered
“Dadi ne kuch kaha hoga”
“I doubt it” Viveka sighed leaning back shelling peas, with a yawn (severely sleep deprived), aiming peas into the bowl set on the floor while she sat on the swing
Did a Michael Jordan like cheer each time the tiny pearl landed in the giant a—bowl😆
“I am so good” she mumbled
“She is right here helping me fix dinner, or I should say prep for dinner” Anu brought someone with her
“Veev beta dekho kaun hai” Anu was smiling
Viveka sat up shocked, it was the Parashar kid !!! Dressed like he was off to a modeling shoot, in dark pants and a bespoke stripe shirt, hair neatly parted to the side, and combed over☺️
in her Ma Papa’s messy unmade bedroom, approaching the balcony with 3 days worth of damp clothing hanging down like one of those colonial punkahs pulled by rope, in fact it could be lowered and raised by rope!!
“Tum? Tum kab aaye?” she blurted in shock, her heart racing
