Shit. I missed his call, Sai cursed herself. She was taking a shower that night when she heard her phone ring. Not once, not twice but thrice. What a bid timing, she thought to herself. The call that she was impatiently waiting for, came, but she couldn’t take it.
Main phone call loon kya, she asked herself. Lekin kyun karoon main call. Unko baat karni hai mujhse, mujhe nahi, she tried convincing herself. She stared at her phone for a while, deciding whether to call or not to call when her phone rang again.
Keeping herself composed, she waited for few rings before picking the call. She hesitated before speaking. Woh bhi to hello bol sakte hain.
“Sai,” she heard him after 2 weeks. Somehow, his voice sounded different, it was heavier than usual.
“Are you there Sai?” he said again after receiving no reply.
“Maine call li hain, toh main hi hongi na,” came her reply, forcing a weak smile from Virat.
“Main har baar bhool kyun jaata hoon, ke jab bhi tumse baat karta hoon, toh das baar sochke baat karna parta hai,” came his usual reply.
“Aur maine bhi pehla kaha tha, aap araam se 1-2 saal lijiye sochne ke liye aur phir mujhse baat Karen. Phone karne ki kya zarurat thi?” Remembering their previous video call brought a smile on both’s face, after long.
“I’m sorry Sai,” Virat said after a while. “I’m sorry for my behavior and also for the way my family behaved with you,” he apologized to her.
“Aapko kaise…”
“Aai told me everything Sai. I wished I listened to you that day Sai. But even if I didn’t listen Sai, I shouldn’t have behaved so harshly with you. I’m sorry for having lashed out on you. I’m sorry for having overlooked my family’s taunts and misbehavior. Main baar baar sirf yehi kehta gaya ke tumhe apne tareeke badalna chahiye. Lekin, main yeh bhool gaya ke tum waise kyun behave karti ho un ke saath. Aai , Bua aur Tai ko tumse koyi problem nahi. Sirf baki parivaar ko roz tumse kuch na kuch issue hote hai. Main bhool gaya ke who tumko pasand nahi karte issi liye roz koyi na koyi issue khara karte rehte hain. I blame myself for this to some extent. Jab maine tumse shaadi ki, mujhe laga tummere saat safe rahogi, araam se jiogi, apni parhayi pe focus karogi, lekiny ahan pe toh sab tum ko chain se rehne hi nahi dete. I’m sorry ke maine tumse yeh kaha ke tumhe unko samjhne ki koshish karna chahiye. Main yeh bhool gaya ke tum jitni bhi koshish karogi, who kabhi satisfied nahi honge.” He tried apologizing.
“Virat Sir, aap ko un ke taraf se maafi nahi mangni chahiye. Un hone galat kiya mere saath. Mujhe koyi expectation nahin hein unse, ke woh mujhse maanfi maange, lekin mujhe acha nahi lagega agar aap aisi sorry kahenge. Aur waise bhi, mujhe bhi, sorry kehni thi aapse,” she told him.
“Tum kyun sorry ho?” Virat asked puzzled.
“Itni bhi sorry nahi hoon,” she clarified, which got her a chuckle from Virat, “bas thodi si hi sorry hoon. Mera matlab, uss din main bhi kuch zyaada hi bol gayi. Aap kaam se ghar wapas aaye, thaka aur main kya kya bol gayi. Woh Abba waali comparison nahin karna chahiye tha mujhe,” she apologized realized she went a bit too far with that comment that day. Ab itni bhi bure nahi hain Virat ke usko bolo ke woh uski Abba ki per ki choti ungli ki nakhoon ke barabar bhi nahi hain.
Virat closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He did feel hurt with that comment. But that was the least of thing he could endure to compensate for the pain his family were inflicting her.
And then he took his decision. He knew what he had to do next.
“Sai, ice cream khane choli gi?” he popped the question.
She blinked twice and gave her phone a weird look, trying to process what she heard. Did he actually say that?
“Bolo na Sai.”
“Maine abhi abhi aapse maafi maangi. Did you hear me?”
“Woh sab choro Sai. Pehle yeh batao, chalo gi ki nahi?”
“Dekhiye Virat Sir. Ice cream ko mana nahi karoongi. Lekin iss waqt?Kaise?”
“Who sab tum mujhpe chodo,” he replied lifting his invisible collar. “Wardi waale hone ka kuch toh fayda uthana chahiye. Kaya bolte?”

Ashwini was giving Kaku her medicines when she saw Virat coming down the stairs, whistling, like he used to before. One look at her son and she knew he made up with Sai. Those last 2 weeks, he looked gloomy. Not for once did he smile at her or the other family members.
Hearing him, Kaku turned around.
“Masta Mast. Kitna acha lag raha hain mere Virat. Kahan jaarahe ho iss waqt?”
Virat was in no mood in replying. In fact, he didn’t want to see Kaku, Kaka and his father. After what his Aai told him, he felt disgusted with them. He didn’t even want to start about Pakhi. He was equally disgusted with her.
“Sai se milne,” he replied calmly.
“Kaya? Uss Jungli Moolgi se? Pana ka?” She questioned him as she got on her feet. Her loud voice was enough to get the attention of the rest of the family members.
“Kyun ka kya matlab Kaku? Sai meri biwi hain. Usse milne mein kya problem?” heasked back.
“Biwi? Kaisi Biwi? Woh jisne iss ghar ko 2 hafte pehle choda bina koyi wajah ke?”
“Kaku, it’s better you don’t ask me anything about this. Main nahi chahta ke main aapko aisa jawaab doon ke aapko acha nahi lagenge.” He tried keeping his calm. It was not in his nature to talk back to his elders. And he didn’t want to do it now.
“Nahi Virat. Tum uss jungle, battameez ladki se milne nahi jaao. Maine ek bar keh di,bas keh hi. Samajla?”
“Kaya Kaku? Kaya nahi? Main Sai se milne kyun nahi jaa sakta? Kyunki ussne aap logon ki wajah se ghar choda? Huh?” he questioned her. Kaku was taken aback with Virat’s tone.
“Virat!!!” his Baba hissed his name. “Yeh tum kis tarah Vahini se baat kar rahe ho. Aur hamari wajah se gayi ka kya matlab? Huh? Saaf saaf kaho,”
“Main saaf saaf hi boloonga Baba. Mujhe waise bhi jalebi ki tarah baat ghoomaana nahi aata. Aap ne Sahi ko thappar marne ki dhamki di thi ya nahi? Boliye?”
“Virat. Ye…”
“Di ya nahi,” he asked louder.
“Tu…”
“Di ya nahi,” he scowled, his eyes spitting fire. “Aur aap Kaku, Sai ko laaton se maarna chahti thi? Yehi hain aap ke oonche khandan wali traits? Kya oonchein Marathi khandanon mein yehi chalta hain? Ke bahu pasand nahi toh usse maarne ki dhamki dena? Acha hi hua Kaka Saheb yahan nahi hain, warne aapke aur baba ka Sai ko leke bartaav dekh ke unhe bahut choth pahunchta,” he replied back Kaku.
“Virat,” Kaku stopped him angrily.
“Maine sach kaha toh aap bura maan gayi Kaku. Roz aap logon joh Sai ko taane pe taane dete rehte ho, kabhi socha, uspe kya bitti hai? Bechari ka toh koyi nahi hai,hamara ilawa. Phir bhi sab usko neecha dikhati hai, usse yeh ehsaas dilate hainke who chote khandaan se hai, ke iss ghar mein usse rehne de kar hum sab uspe kitna bara ehsaan kiya hain. Maine pehle bhi kaha hai Kaku. Maine Sai pe koyi taras khakar shaadi nahi ki. Main usse apni zimmedaari manta hoon. Aur mere liye Pariwaar ka doosra naam zimmedaari hai. Toh phir aap sab ko yeh baat samajh kyun nahi aate? Aap logon ke behkaawe mein aakar, maine bhi uss ko kya kuch nahi kaha. I curse myself daily, remembering what all I told her that day.”
“Virat yeh tum Badi Mami se kaise baat kar rahe ho. Uss Sai ke saath rehke tum bhi apna manners bhool gaye kya. Uss ki tarah?” Pakhi started with her act.
“Manners ki toh tum baat ki mat karo Pakhi. Sai jaisi bhi hai, lekin logon ka dil nahi dukhaati, logon ko choth nahi pahunchati, logon ke dard pe malham lagati hain woh,tumhaari tarah namak nahi daalti. Main soch bhi nahi sakta Pakhi maine tumse dosti kaise ki. Jiss Pakhi ko main jaanta tha, woh aisi nahi thi. Ya shayad, maine hi samjhne mein bhool kar di,” he replied her back.
“Virat, who sirf tumhaari dost nahi lekin tumhare bade bhai ki biwi bhi hain. Izaat se baat karo,” Kaku chided him.
“Bade bhai ki biwi hain, toh bade bhai ki biwi banke rahe. Meri biwi ban ne ki koshish na kare,” Virat gritted the words, remembering how she tried feeding him the last time, waited for him to come back from work. Everyone gasped at his words, but he immediately made his way out from there.
“Virat, who ladki doobara iss ghar mein wapas nahi aayegi,” Kaku stopped him.
He stopped in his tracks and turned around.
“Main khud usse iss ghar mein wapas nahi laaoonga Kaku,” he told them. “Main kal se police head-quarters shift kar raha hoon, apni biwi ke saath.” He announced and stomped off, not wanting to hear any further comments.
