Kalank is deemed as dated melodrama. The acting of the cast was piss poor.

Would Kalank work in the decade of Amitabh's,Rekha's,Hema's,Khanna's of 70's or Akshay's,SRK's,Salman's,Kajol's,Karishma's of 90's where large sets, love triangle melodrama, long duration were a constant feature in films?

You're not just changing the era you're massively upgrading the cast. The director would also be different and maybe could handle the material better.

Would the material work in those decades?

the movie would have worked but the directing was horrible, tried to copy slb and that is a large task. sometime slb fails himself, and his style is not original he copies baz lurhrman.

and the screenplay was horrible, completely wasted madhuri and Sanjay.

Definitely. Kalank's film and story wasn't bad, the execution, casting and music played a crucial role.

If it were the 90s imagine Anil, Madhuri, Sanjay (as VD), Sridevi, Rekha and Shashi Kapoor in the roles with Karishma in Kiara's role. Music by Anand-Milind, Lyrics by Sameer, songs sung by Anuradha Paudwal, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Vinod Rathod (for a song like first class).

If it were the 70s imagine Vinod Khanna, Hema Malini, Rishi Kapoor, Rekha (in Sonakshi's role this time), Waheeda Rehman and Dilip Kumar, with Mumtaz in Kiara's role. Music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri, song sung by Mohd. Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle.

I grew up in the 90s but don't remember any time period film that made it big in that era. The closest I remember is Zubeida which was early 2000s. 90s to me was more about modern contemporary movies.

So maybe it would've worked in 70s. I can't imagine it in 90s no matter how great the cast it. Unless the material is altered significantly to a point where it barely resembles the movie we know. All the characters in the movie were unlikable and they lacked depth. Each relationship was mediocre and lame. I can't imagine any of it working. It would've just depended on which era had audience who would've overlooked such things.

Many bad films in those decades were blockbusters.
