So maybe it would've worked in 70s. I can't imagine it in 90s no matter how great the cast it. Unless the material is altered significantly to a point where it barely resembles the movie we know. All the characters in the movie were unlikable and they lacked depth. Each relationship was mediocre and lame. I can't imagine any of it working. It would've just depended on which era had audience who would've overlooked such things.

Yes for the simple fact that SRK and Kajol could sell those kind of movies. Karan tried it with ADHM and failed, SRK had the ability to sell romantic epics.

I thought Varun ad Alia's respective characters weren't developed properly and neither was their love story

Yup. Back then music was the most important part of the film and was treated so.

I think SRK and Ajay - the original cast I think?- would have been fabulous in either role. The male characters- especially Varun's were very dynamic and they needed better direction and a more experienced star cast.

I have no idea what they tried to do with Alia's character- budding musician, budding journalist, budding feminist, chhoti bahu roaming about the streets of Lahore/whatever city alone as if it wasnt the 1940s?

Disaster.

The storyline was fine but the film had no idea what it wanted to do. Look at Veer Zara on the other hand. Story was ghissa pitta but the treatment by Yash Chopra felt so young and fresh. Esply Rani's character- wow!
