This week there was a Google Doodle which was paying tribute to Zohra Sehgal.

Zohra Sehgal: Google Doodle features Iconic Indian actress

But actually what special about it was in this week in 1946,her film “Neecha Nagar” released, which was also showcased at the Cannes Film Festival. It is also considered as India's first international critical success and the only Indian film to have won Palme d’Or.

The film depicts social issue of the income disparity, the class divide between the rich and the poor, the haves and the have-nots struggle. The context of the movie still very much holds relevance today. Bong Joon-ho who made PARASITE movie “the one considered today as a cinematic masterpiece” was also inspired by the depiction of the societal divide in the movies like this one. With all the shitty remakes Bollywood makes, I wonder why no one thought of reprising this hidden gem.

Another thing which got my attention was that it was the debut movie of director Chetan Anand. He is one of the most versatile directors who has worked and aced every genre he has worked on. He made 17 movies but include genres from comedy to war movies to romance. (Personal life is also interesting do read his Wiki).

(A commemorative postage stamp on Chetan Anand)

So amidst all the negativity going around, I thought why not start something new, something because of which we all ended up on this forum, to talk about Cinema. We got to look into our own Cinema and find such forgotten masterpieces rather than quibbling over the state of current Indian cinema. If you know about such movies or come across such which have interesting Trivia attached to them do share.

Lovely topic :) I don’t know if this counts but gonna share anyway. In Turkey, came across a man steering our boat who kept singing ‘Awara hoon’ on repeat. He later told us how popular the song had been in the country growing up. A Nigerian friend till date gushes over SRK and movies like Mother India, Anand, Seeta aur Geeta (I haven’t seen any of these😳) and can actually speak conversational Hindi, owing to the popularity of Bollywood in the country. Anyway, what i’m trying to get at is how lovely it is to see the international reach of Bollywood in countries i’d never expect and how it has truly transcended barriers over the years.

Awaara hoon was a sensation worldwide especially in Society Union, China and the middle east. Its from the movie Awaara which was also shown in Cannes Film Festival and got nominated for Grand Prize.

"Due to the film's remarkable success with Turkish audiences, Awaara was remade in Turkey a total of eight times. "

Yea Bollywood had the reach in countries we would never expect but is something which is missing these days. 😒 We are making shitty content these days.
