...The conversatiom shifts to Star One. Wasn't it the most expensive dud to come out of the Star network? It's only now , after The Great Laughter Challenge and Nach Baliye, that there's been some buzz about the channel. Nair's hackles are up. "I cant tell you what the investment in the channel was," he says tersely. "But I can tell you that we are very close to Zee, which, you must remember, is an 11-year brand. We also have our guns trained on Sony. And after Sony, Star One will go for Star Plus."
The Star One plan was straightforward, says Nair.The idea was that fatigue would eventually set in at some stage with Star Plus, so viewers would look elsewhere for entertainment options. In which case, they should go to an offering from the star network rather than any other channel. "We should give them an alternative ourselves," says Nair. "Star One's flavour was different from Star Plus - it was younger, more urban, taking the drama out of homes. Not all programming worked, but we got the attitude right. Once the brand was established, we went for broad-basing the channel. That was always the original intention." Hence shows like TGILC and Nach Baliye - to widen the appeal of the channel. Though ask people to name a Star One show, and those are the only two names most people will come up with...
