Is Anurag Kashyap overrated?

I haven't really enjoyed a single movie of his that much, not even Gangs of Wasseypur. I find it ironic when people go on and on about his craft and abilities, but don't bother too see his movies in the theatres. I have watched quite a few, and they left me unmoved.

Granted that :

1. He uses unconventional camera angles.

2.He conveys mood through lighting,

3. He tries to give a new spin to an age-old patriarchal tale. E.g. - DevD

4. Movies like No Smoking are vague and confusing

But is he really all that he's made out to be? All that cuss lang. and profanity is needed?Also, his ample use of sex and violence shows a director not completely convinced about his own craft, having to use these as selling-points.

I think he's overrated critically(commercially is another story altogether). Unconventional doesn't always mean good.

Yes...His kind of cinema is for the people who want to pay for getting depressed!

He is (or used to be) great with dialogues and gets very good performances out of his actors. He is obviously well read cinematically and has a very good idea about the past and current greats from whom he borrows liberally. However he is a poor narrator and even his strongest films suffer from his incoherent storytelling.

Of course right now he is nothing more than a do kaudi ka propaganda merchant serving his globalist/Islamist masters. His recent work is nothing more than a cinematic version of garbage served up by NDTV/TheWire/Troll.in/TheQuint etc.

No Smoking movie is actually a masterpiece. If you didn't understand it, means you need to rewatch the movie to notice the details. There are many hidden messages behind it's entire concept, and Anurag Kashyap has given an open ending to the audience to guess by themselves what actually happened there. I would rather say that he is an underrated director and his movies are far ahead of the time.

I think his movies are cool when he doesn't also try to make it a mainstream film. I don't think people talk about him much or praise him so no he is not overrated.

His movies need ek alag sa mind set to watch patiently and grasp them in entirety...I do enjoy his movies from time to time but I don’t look forward to them....

He was some sort of indie film hero 🤦‍♂️

He's considered great coz he brings "off beat" cinema to mainstream cinema. But there are so many who have done that before, only PR wasn't as big back then.

Pankuj Parashar was great at off beat cinema. Even his low budget films were great. And Karamchand was huge a success, I hope DD airs it soon.
