He is not overrated - the commercial brigade doesn't consider him to be a director, at all.

He is also not underrated - the critics or fans of 'different' cinema praise him to skies (sometimes well deserved, too).

So, he is in a balanced position, overall.

Personally, I look forward to his movies, and as a well-wisher, I just wish he keeps on doing movies. I enjoy most, if not all. Also, he has extraordinary music taste, another reason to look forward to his movies, for me.

He was some sort of indie film hero 🤦‍♂️

True. Just speaking for myself here and no one else, he was sort of an indie film hero to me. He was absolutely pretentious but I think his fight against mainstream movie makers aka kjo made room for these other content driven movie directors to come afterwards. I am a 90s kid so I mainly grew up on masala trash. It wasn't till I saw Anurag Kashyap I realized "art films" can be entertaining as well and it basically changed how I started watching Indian movies. So even though Anurag is not perfect, I appreciate him a lot simply for opening that door for me.

I love his films.

Black Friday, No Smoking, Dev D, GOW, Gulaal, Ugly all these are brilliant and beautiful.

No. I have only seen few of his films (Ugly and Dev D), and his 3 short films in the Bombay Talkies series. Also Manmarziyaan but that wasn't his forte at all. I think he is brilliant. He is able to capture the worst and the darkest parts of the human psychology and portray them in the way it is, ugly and unsettling.

The only problem I have with him is his camera work, I find it too unaestheic. But I guess again these kind of subjects warrant and justify it.

I would love to explore more of his work.

I did think he had potential, but over a couple of movies, he became more like RGV, losing sense of direction completely. Very inconsistent and undisciplined as a director. Now most of the time, he just comes across as someone disgruntled and lost.

His most recent short story in Ghost stories, was such an awful one. He did such an awful job, felt bad for his heroine, who was earnestly trying to translate his vision on screen.

An there’s so many shady stories about him 😆

In his genre, he is brilliant. Not overrated; not underrated.

Outside his niche, say when he does a Manmarziyan or Bombay Velvet, he is terrible.

I did watch a couple of interviews of his. I won't call him a Western mimic, because he actually does cinema much better than them. However, he is an elitist and seems to sneer at folks who would rather spend their hard-earned money on something they enjoy.

Why? Why, oh, why? If Anurag can't connect with audience that's his fault, not the viewers'. If mass filmmakers can't make intelligent cinema, that's their problem.

I have come to realize most of my favorite movies, irrespective of the language, are Anurag Kashyap ones. Granted his movies are not feel good ones, so I don't like to rewatch them a lot, but man do I love them.

I have also come to realize he's very polarizing. The way I am enchanted by his movies, there's another group that hates his work (coincidentally all the folks in the latter category I know are girls).

Apart from movies, I also love the music in them.

My fav Anurag movies:

Gulaal > Ugly > Raman Raghav 2.0 > GOW series > Dev D > Black Friday

(Haven't seen Paanch, No Smoking, Girl in Yellow boots yet)

Fav music from his movies:

Dev D (I discovered Amit Trivedi and used to listen this on loop)

GOW series (my favorite North Indian flavored music)

Gulaal (music I find really artistic and love listening to on a loop)

The biggest regret I have of Anurag not cracking commercial Bollywood is that he'll never make Doga, the movie I've waited all my life for. And I'll die with this wishlist unfulfilled 😭

However he is a poor narrator and even his strongest films suffer from his incoherent storytelling.

Of course right now he is nothing more than a do kaudi ka propaganda merchant serving his globalist/Islamist masters. His recent work is nothing more than a cinematic version of garbage served up by NDTV/TheWire/Troll.in/TheQuint etc.

@bold 👏🤣

I still wonder why butthurts haven't reported your comment yet.

Spoken stark truth my friend!
