Mini returned home and told everyone about her decision. Babita couldn’t believe her ears first, “Mini, you really liked him. You are not telling lie right?” Babita asked to confirm her answer.“Mom, what is there to lie? I mean you guys wont rest until you find a perfect groom for me and sent me away with him in two months. And from all those ‘rishtas’ you brought for me I like this guy the most.” replied Mini disinterestedly. “So its done then. If you both liked each other we will call him in the evening and invite him here for tomorrow.” Said Babita excitedly. “Whatever” said Mini as she rolled her eyes at her mom implying that she was not at all interested but as soon as she went inside her room she closed the door and dialed Preet’s number to share this news. On the other hand Babita noticed that Hanuman Singh was lost in his thought. “What happened? What are you thinking?” asked Babita. “Nothing, all this while we were searching groom for our daughter and when we finally found one I am not liking this fact. He will take away my little daughter from me.” Said Hanuman getting all emotional. “Betiyaan toh hoti hi paraya dhan hai. Ek din toh unhe jana hi padta hai apne maa baap ka ghar chhod kar.” Replied Babita as she herself wiped her tears.

“Preet kaure, say na something. Why you suddenly went so silent?” asked Mini over the phone. “Mini, to tell you the truth. From what you have told me about him, I find this man really weird. I mean every girl has right to expect gifts and flowers from her boyfriend and also hear him say those three magical words. Who is he to deny her this small happiness?” asked Preet. “Oye Preet kaure, stop it yaar…..you and your filmy gyan…..three magical words…gifts and flowers….come on yaar isse bhi jyada jaruri cheeze hoti hain life mein. Don’t forget I also don’t like this PDA” Replied Mini. “Still yaar, I don’t get good vibes from him. He sounds strange….like some….some….i don’t have right word to describe him.” Said Preet confused about whether she should be happy for her best friend or not. “You and your vibes…please keep them to yourself. You are really bad at judging people.I remember your last boyfriend. I warned you several times that he is obnoxious dominating pig but you were so crazy in his love. You didn’t believe me until you experienced it yourself.” Mini reminded Preet of her mistake. “Its ok Mini,no need to dig out old graves. I understood what you are trying to say.” Preet chided her friend. “Preet kaure, listen. Its not like I have fallen in love with him. You know my parents right only two months left for my 23rd birthday. They already quashed all my hopes of pursuing career in photography. So in such circumstances Neil Oberoi is my only hope. My parents will not rest unless they find a match for me. So I have no other way out. If I have to marry someone then why not this guy. And Preet today after meeting him I really liked him. He is mature, understanding and greatest plus point he has no objection from my photography.” Explained Mini. “Hmm….I think you are right Mini. May be I am over thinking.” Said Preet.

Neil was in his house. He was working on his laptop and having his coffee when an elderly lady put her hand lovingly on his head, “Son, you must be tired. Kab tak kaam karte rahoge….ye tumhara itni der raat tak kaam mein dube rehna mujhe jara bhi pasand nahi.” Said that elderly lady. “Naeem bi, you know I am passionate about my work. I cant rest unless I finish everything as per my satisfaction.” Replied Neil without looking up from the laptop. “That’s because you have only got work in your life. That’s why I am pestering you to settle down….hey, aaj toh tum wo Patiala wali ladki se milne jane wale the na?” asked Naeem bi as she remembered the girl’s parents had called him. “Ya, I went there. I met her…In fact I liked her. She liked me too. Her parents called me in the evening and asked if I could come at their house to talk further.” said Neil still engrossed in his laptop. “What? And you are telling me this now? Ya, main hoon hi kaun tumhari jo tumhe mujhe kuch batao. I am just a head servant of this house.” said Naeem bi as she was little hurt. This got Neil’s attention and he finally put aside his laptop and made her sit with him on sofa. “Come on yaar Naeem bi, you know very well what you mean to me. You have taken care of me since I was a small kid. When dad died my real mom never bothered to care for me but you were therewith me in all my tough times. And please don’t refer yourself as just a head servant. You know you are more than that.” Replied Neil holding her hands. “Ok ok now leave me, you know it very well since your childhood how to pacify me.”Said Naeem bi as she smiled at him. “They have invited me tomorrow at their house. I want you to come with me. I don’t know anything about rituals and customs and whatever I heard about them from Mini they seems a little conservative and religious to me.” Said Neil. “Hmm…so the name is Mini…cute” replied Naeem bi.

Next day Neil went to Saroj mami’s house with Naeem bi. Babita and Hanuman welcomed them. Neil was looking here and there searching for Mini when his eyes landed on Punjabi salwar suit clad girl holding tray of refreshments for them. He almost choked on his tea he was drinking as he couldn’t believe she was the same girl he met yesterday. She clearly looked uncomfortable pretending as a shy bride to be. He tried to control his laughter with difficulty. When Mini saw this she glared at him angrily. Thats the moment he got a glimpse of that firebrand girl from yesterday. Now he came to realize what she was talking about her parents were correct word to word. Mini sat down on the sofa in front of him. “So, Neil beta, wont you introduce us to her” asked Babita referring to Naeem bi. “Oh yes, of course. She is Naeem bi. She was my nanny in childhood. Since then she is there with me. My whole house is under her care.” Said Neil. Babita and Hanuman greeted Naeem bi while Saroj mami made a comment, “Oh she is kind of head servant of your house.” Neil didn’t like it. “She is like a motherly figure to me. I respect her a lot. I would like if you call her Naeem bi not anything else.” Said Neil sternly. Mini just rolled her eyes at Saroj mami while Babita and Hanuman tried to change the topic to avoid awkward situation.

“So Neil, actually we wanted to talk about this ‘rishta as you both liked each other so we were thinking to finalize everything soon as according to Mini’s kundli we have only two months left for her marriage.” Said Babita. “Yes, I know. I don’t mind getting married in two months time.” replied Neil. “But, Neil these things needs discussion….I mean we were hoping that you will bring your mom with you.” Said Babita. Mini noticed Neil become tensed on the mention of his mom. “But I have told you already. I live all by myself. My mom remarried. I have relatives but I am not close to them.” Replied Neil as calmly as possible. Mini was watching him and she could tell he was not comfortable with this topic. “But still…she is your mom…I mean with whom we would discuss all the things if not with her?” Babita argued. Neil took a deep breath. “See, you people are giving your daughter to me. So I have to be honest with you. I don’t want to hide anything. Truth is that I was just 16 years old when my dad died. My mom didn’t even wait for a year after that and she remarried with ….with…the manager in my dad’s company. I was against it. I couldn’t accept her husband in my life. My dad has left the house and business in my name so I asked her to leave my dad’s house and she left to be with her new husband. But since I was minor I couldn’t legally handle dad’s business.She took care of it with her new husband. Then when I turned 18 she asked me to join the business but I hated her and that business run by her and her partner. So I didn’t take anything from her and transferred everything in her name. I completed my studies and started from the scratch. I took loan against my house and invested it in my IT business. Soon the hard work started to payoff and I became a successful businessman. I am not even in talking terms with my mom. So if you expect that she will participate in my wedding then I am sorry. I wont allow her even if she wants to. That’s me and my life. If you are ok with it then most welcome if not then I am sorry to waste your time you should find someone else for your daughter.” Neil said in his same business like tone.

Everyone was silent for few minutes. Babita looked at Hanuman and asked in gestures what he thinks to which he replied in gestures that he finds everything is ok. Then breaking the silence Hanuman Singh spoke, “Neil, we are very sorry to bring up this topic. We really appreciate your honesty and we are fine by your family history.” Mini released the breath she didn’t realize she was holding till now and sighed in relief. But Saroj spill the venom, “But our problem is still unsolved. To whom we are going to discuss about the rituals and customs now as you dont have any elder by your side?” “With Naeem bi. That’s why I brought her with me.” Replied Neil irriated with this Saroj mami now. “But she is muslim what does she know about our religion?” Saroj mami said again in her irritable voice. Neil glared at her but before he could say anything Mini spoke, “Saroj mami, how could you bring religion in all this. Come on its 21st century and you are still stuck in religion shit and besides that human relation are never subjected to the boundaries made by religion.” Neil looked at Mini. He liked how she defended Naeem bi in front of everyone. “Saroj, tu bhi na….kya kya baatein leke baith jati hai? Unka dharm alag hai toh kya hua hum log hain na unhe samjha denge sab.” Said Hanuman Singh to save the situation. “Bhai sahab aap log bilkul fikar mat karo….Bhale hi main alag dharm se hoon but I have spent all my life in a punjabi family. I know all your rituals and customs .Aapko kisi bhi cheez se koi shikayat nahi hogi.” Naeem bi assured them.

“Then everything is sorted out. We asked our pandit ji already and he said that day after tomorrow is a very good muhurat for engagement and we can have wedding next month.” Concluded Hanuman Singh but Babita nudged him with her elbow and gestured him to ask the important questions to which Hanuman Singh nodded in yes. “Neil, tell us without any hesitation what are your expectations from us regarding this marriage. Mini is my only daughter and whatever you say is fine by me.” Mini hated this topic in marriage. She was about to say something when Neil spoke, “Please Mr.Singh….dont embarrass me like this. How could you even think such things. I don’t want anything from you. I am financially sound I earn enough to fulfill my wife’s wishes. I don’t want any favour from you.” Mini smiled at him and sent a silent thank you to God that he is not one of those money hungry people.“You really are nice human being” Hanuman Singh praised Neil. “But still beta, at least tell us what kind of wedding you want?” asked Babita. “Mrs. Singh,whatever you guys decide is fine by me. But if you want to know my preference then I would like a simple wedding without any show off.” Replied Neil.

“Ok its final then, day after tomorrow we can do the engagement and next month wedding and reception in Patiala.”Concluded Hanuman Singh. “Ok, Since my friends and business circle is here I will throw one more reception party in Delhi” Neil agreed. “Why don’t you guys come to our home for engagement. This way you will see your Mini’s future sasural.” Naeem bi suggested and everyone liked the idea. Soon the engagement and wedding dates were fixed.
