It's more about the change in age dynamics than social acceptance. Over the past two decades, the age bracket of maturity and the so called, "peak years," has moved from the 20s to the 30s. The notion that, "30 is the new 20," is starkly true.
There are lots of factors. But the major one is economic freedom. Twenty years ago, people would be settled by their mid or late 20s. These days, people are settling more in their 30s and economic freedom, for the middle class at least, doesn't come around until they're in their 30s.
The notion that 30 is old is also waning. The whole definition of age has changed. Just think about it. Karishma debuted when she was 16. Today's young gen sex symbol is Disha Patani and she's 27. Amongst the older ones, it's still Katrina and she's in her late 30s. The likes of Jhaanvi and Ananya are considered kids when it would be the prime years for actresses in their 90s.
Ditto for the actors. The young-gen actors (Vicky, Kartik, etc.) are in their 30s. The middle gen ones like Ayushmann, Rajkumar Yadav, and Ranveer are in their mid-30s.
Society has changed and along with it the definition of young and old. Decades ago, the transition years were 16-22, 24 max. Now the transition years have expanded and it's 20-28 for most.
Times have changed and with it perception has.
There's no way a 55-year-old would be the country's leading star 20 years ago. Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, and Dharmendra peaked in their 40s. It was downhill after that. Rajesh Khanna peaked in his late 30s. But today, we have a 55-year-old leading star followed by another 55-year-old. The other one is in his mid-40s and finally, the hit machine is in his early 50s.
Perception has changed that's why we have leading female stars in their 30s now, not in their 20s.
