When the developed countries with much lesser populations are struggling with this problem then it's better not to imagine where a country like ours stand. The three members of Britain's royal family later four started this new trend to destigmatize depression. When prince Harry and William spoke about their personal struggles post the Diana-Charles controversy and later her untimely departure, UK felt a strong wave of mental resurrection. They are working really hard in this area and they are starting it at grassroot levels(pregnancy,post-natal,neo-natal,Schools) One can surely hope their rate of success to grow with each passing year.

Now imagine INDIA ! We can't right ! Just the imagination is so messed up that it automatically turns us hopeless for its future. Suicidal people are often the victims of bad parenting, pathetic education system and unethical working environments. But we put all the blame on nonsensical stuffs. Imagine a mother of two boys with down syndrome committing suicide and people saying oh what a witch of a woman to die leaving her unhealthy children behind !!! Not even an ounce of sympathy for that woman cuz she was a mother and mothers are bound to tolerate every Goddamn thing. A woman in our society can't even take her life not because she shouldn't but because who will take care of her sons after her ? This is just a molecule sized example of our selective sympathy, hypocritical judgement and ironical rhetoration the bigger picture is worst.

In a multilayered society like ours, achieving zero suicide goal is next to impossible. A poor person suffering from depression can't even speak the language of the posh psychiatrist let alone have a discussion and of course listening to someone should only be done only if that person is paying you if not, he can go to hell for you don't care. Teachers can expect respect equal to that of Brahma's or Vishnu's but can't even qualify a normal efficiency test. Parents can expect their children to be like Raam and Savitri but can't provide them necessary fundamental values other than study hard, earn good, have children monotony. Govt officials think they are entitled to possess an air of nonchalance and negligence but the moment something disastrous happens, it's all the fault of public. We live in a country where a victim is condemned and a criminal is celebrated. We live in a country where a little girl is advised to idolize Sita and Savitri out of all legendary women. We live in a country where saying derogatory curse words is the quotient of coolness and harassing a woman define your masculinity. We live in a country where we must wear patriotism on our sleeves and chant hail motherland all the time but as a woman I'm yet to find 10 practical reasons to feel proud to be born in this country as a woman.

This deserves a standing ovation !!!!!!!! Compact with logic, facts and brilliant analysis. And the example of the mother is justsmiley32

As you said, the root of depression can often be emotional abuse or emotional unavailability faced during childhood. According to most parents----- they are kids, their job is to eat, study, play, sleep. Plus we give them so many toys. There's no reason to be unhappy. My chunnu munnu is chooo appy !!!!

And if chunnu has a resting poker face all the time, she will be asked to smile and play outside. Because that's how kids are supposed to be.

Chunnu listens to fairly tales at night where the beautiful stable girl waits for her prince charming. Chunnu learns that she's supposed to be beautiful. She is supposed to wait for the perfect man. She is supposed to be rescued and owned. Chunnu learns to love curves and fairness creams.

In the mean time, Munnu learns that boys aren't supposed to play with teddy bears. He collides his toy cars into walls, he shoots a gun at daddy and daddy pretends to die. Munnu learns reckless driving and violence are attractive and manly.

Chunnu waits for her owner because she is paraya dhan. If she is fair skinned, she bullies her ugly fat friend. Because girls are not supposed to be ugly. The fatso deserves it. Munnu bullies the thin nerdy boy. Mommy Daddy come to know and give a proud smile. The thin nerd gets beaten up by daddy for crying. Fatso gets scolded for stress-eating.

I was talking about emotional abuse and unavailability. In a country where physical abuse ( not sexual ) is a matter of pride, it feels stupid to even talk about emotional abuse. Who hasn't heard some old man proudly saying "we had so much severe punishments in our days. We always got beaten black and blue. We obeyed our elders blindly. Never thought about right-wrong, good-bad. We were so respectful and these brats are so opinionated ! That's why we were raised so great. And kids these days, all the law and love have spoilt them. We had such a tough life and these brats keep complaining" 😑

The irony is, if we are brats then we must be shitty as parents. But if someone decides not to reproduce and add to this overwhelming population, those same people will react like the world would end if even one fertile person chooses not to conceive. In India, everyday is the judgement day.

But still I feel positive because even among all these, the mass consciousness is increasing. Even kids these days are much more conscious and mature. Not only social, political and economical consciousness is also increasing among the youth. Social media is a strong weapon ( though it too is filled with trolls, frauds and has a widespread dark side ). Still baby steps. People like you and me should participate in spreading this consciousness among the mass. Kindness is reflective and that's why a powerful boomerang against the darkness. The world is out to snatch that power from us. We must not succumb to that and stop being kind. But we shouldn't hesitate to show teeth and spit fire where it's needed. The Balance.

I do not know the analogy. My mother told me it is about the importance of sex education. She heard this story in her class from her teacher while she was studying B.Ed. as far as I remember.

Even a Sannyasi like Shankara had to know about sex education elaborately because he is a guru, a guide. Ubhaya Bharati ensured that. This is what my ma told me.

Oh Stormie 🙌🏼 take my bow 🙌🏼 I literally imagined you standing on a podium and expressing your thoughts with sheer brilliance and eloquence. 😇

Loved loved loved your analysis. ❤ Yes dear it all starts with pink for girl and blue for boy orthodoxy. Can't say about big cities but in small towns and villages, girls face severe discrimination right after their birth. It makes my heart break how people expect a little baby girl to be beautiful ! She can't have dark complexion, she can't have physical deformity, she can't have flat nose, she can't have ugly feet, she can't have thousand other signifier of ugliness. If she has any of these, then her life is doomed forever. Who will marry her ? Marriage and motherhood are the only two validations a girl should care about. Her dreams, ambitions, wishes can happily go down the drain. As a girl you are bound to learn this legendary monothetic principle of "Bharatiya Naari Sanskaar" to get the certificate of an Aadarsh Naari from bunch of Idiots. What makes me even more sad is the attitude of women in these matters. More than any man, it's a woman who will be ever ready to do your character assassination. We have more feminine misogynists than masculine ones. Indian mothers and their raja beta obsession is another main reason behind gender discrimination. A male child is always given an edge over a female child. This scenario is changing but in a snail pace especially in rural areas. In urban areas, girls are encouraged to study and get a job because that will be the biggest and if the girl is ugly then the sole reason someone will marry her. Dowry custom is only getting fancier and rich section of society is patronizing it. Femicide, Foeticide, Infanticide are only rising. A woman is bound to conceive a son even at the cost of her dear life. Menstruation is still a taboo. Sex education is simply ignored. Moral values are only for girls. A strong independent woman with an opinion of her own is a threat to our culture. A man with sensibility is not a man. A man with love and respect for his wife in his heart is just a bibi ka ghulaam. A man who abuse his wife is strong and a woman who speaks against it is kulta, kulakshani, karamjali and what not ? Basically women are expected to have unshakable tolerance for everything. We are compared to Sarvamsaha Dharitri !

As you said, we are just taking baby steps. It's a long long journey. May be long after I'm gone my great grand niece will be able to enjoy absolute freedom and will only read the term "women empowerment" in a random history book as a thing of past. 😊

Brilliant analysis !! Special mention to red.

🤗

@green. That comparison is spot on !!!! Dharitri is sarvangsaha.......or so they thought. What happened after that ? Global warming ? Climate change ? Fuel reserve finishing ? Natural resources finishing ? Water scarcity ?Longer, more intense and more frequent natural calamities ?

Dharitri is not sarvangsaha. Dharitri has a calm exterior but has fiery lava inside her heart. They kept degrading and abusing her. So now she's erupting. She is bringing intense storms, she is vomiting fire. She refuses to endure. She reclaims her worth. No wonder certain people are denying climate change as well. Just like they villify feminism. But She has had enough. And so have we. We are just like the mother earth. And If a mother can create life, She can do anything. 😘

In rural areas, many teenage girls teaming up to prevent child marriage and spreading consciousness. In yesteryears, almost all rapes went silent because of the fear of victim blaming. But nowadays more and more families are raising voices and seeking justice in favour of their daughters. The desire of independence is spreading even among the poor urban communities. I can see this in my locality in Kolkata as well. Both the daughters of my next door neighbour's nanny are going to be graduates. I was talking to a security guard. He was really excited because her daughter was gonna get graduate and was doing a part time receptionist job in that same office. YouTube is helping even rural students to get free tution from renowned teachers. In a basti beside my house, a single mom raises two daughters. They go to school, wear jeans, have male friends. My friend broke her marriage after card was printed because the father of the guy claimed to be of higher status and the groom was silent. Now she is happily married to another.

Just think, even hundred years ago, girls got burnt in their husbands' pyre. Then one or two Ram mohan Roys and Vidyasagars started fighting that scenario. Women weren't allowed to get out of home or even get out of their corsets or ghunghats. Still they got out and now they have reached the space and other women are sending rockets to space as the mission leaders. Now every woman herself is a lakshmibai or a Nivedita or a Rosa parks. So imagine what can happen in the future from today. Let's not wait for our grandnieces whereas we can bring the change ourselves. That pace of the change is not that slow anymore and it's increasing by each passing day.

I am not insomniac. On the contrary I sleep too

much. At least 8hrs a day. But I love to be awake even after midnight and rise the next day at 11.

I have seen that most of the girls at engineering college hostels are like that.

Since you are from engineering background I thought that it can be one of the reasons of your insomnia.

But I no longer have the privilege of being awake till late night. Have classes at 7 am.

I do love midnight. It is so serene. It is so blissful to look at the moonless starry night sky. My dream is to sleep on the rooftop under the starry night sky with all lights in the nearby homes switched off.

Kaash.

If i do that I will become plaything of vultures and if I somehow escape that I will be termed complete insane.

Ohk. Yes I am an engineer but I stayed at home, not hostel. I don't know the exact reason of my insomnia. Not even the exact time it started.

What kind of classes do you have ? You said you got a permanent job. So are you a teacher/professor ?

Red: sounds like a bliss. I used to do it while growing up---sleeping on a mat on the roof ( I came to Kolkata in 2006. I grew up in a nearby town). Vultures never took me 😆. We had a rooftop floral garden. And even in my room, the roof of the mosquito net used to get filled with fireflies which looked exactly like a starry sky. Those nights were just

Yes an Assistant Professor of a general degree college. I have to be scared of vultures because I lack presence of mind. And my brain does not work on mundane things. When I told my mother that I want to rent an apartment she reminded me that I am not experienced at handling vultures.
