When the developed countries with much lesser populations are struggling with this problem then it's better not to imagine where a country like ours stand. The three members of Britain's royal family later four started this new trend to destigmatize depression. When prince Harry and William spoke about their personal struggles post the Diana-Charles controversy and later her untimely departure, UK felt a strong wave of mental resurrection. They are working really hard in this area and they are starting it at grassroot levels(pregnancy,post-natal,neo-natal,Schools) One can surely hope their rate of success to grow with each passing year.
Now imagine INDIA ! We can't right ! Just the imagination is so messed up that it automatically turns us hopeless for its future. Suicidal people are often the victims of bad parenting, pathetic education system and unethical working environments. But we put all the blame on nonsensical stuffs. Imagine a mother of two boys with down syndrome committing suicide and people saying oh what a witch of a woman to die leaving her unhealthy children behind !!! Not even an ounce of sympathy for that woman cuz she was a mother and mothers are bound to tolerate every Goddamn thing. A woman in our society can't even take her life not because she shouldn't but because who will take care of her sons after her ? This is just a molecule sized example of our selective sympathy, hypocritical judgement and ironical rhetoration the bigger picture is worst.
In a multilayered society like ours, achieving zero suicide goal is next to impossible. A poor person suffering from depression can't even speak the language of the posh psychiatrist let alone have a discussion and of course listening to someone should only be done only if that person is paying you if not, he can go to hell for you don't care. Teachers can expect respect equal to that of Brahma's or Vishnu's but can't even qualify a normal efficiency test. Parents can expect their children to be like Raam and Savitri but can't provide them necessary fundamental values other than study hard, earn good, have children monotony. Govt officials think they are entitled to possess an air of nonchalance and negligence but the moment something disastrous happens, it's all the fault of public. We live in a country where a victim is condemned and a criminal is celebrated. We live in a country where a little girl is advised to idolize Sita and Savitri out of all legendary women. We live in a country where saying derogatory curse words is the quotient of coolness and harassing a woman define your masculinity. We live in a country where we must wear patriotism on our sleeves and chant hail motherland all the time but as a woman I'm yet to find 10 practical reasons to feel proud to be born in this country as a woman.
This deserves a standing ovation !!!!!!!! Compact with logic, facts and brilliant analysis. And the example of the mother is just
As you said, the root of depression can often be emotional abuse or emotional unavailability faced during childhood. According to most parents----- they are kids, their job is to eat, study, play, sleep. Plus we give them so many toys. There's no reason to be unhappy. My chunnu munnu is chooo appy !!!!
And if chunnu has a resting poker face all the time, she will be asked to smile and play outside. Because that's how kids are supposed to be.
Chunnu listens to fairly tales at night where the beautiful stable girl waits for her prince charming. Chunnu learns that she's supposed to be beautiful. She is supposed to wait for the perfect man. She is supposed to be rescued and owned. Chunnu learns to love curves and fairness creams.
In the mean time, Munnu learns that boys aren't supposed to play with teddy bears. He collides his toy cars into walls, he shoots a gun at daddy and daddy pretends to die. Munnu learns reckless driving and violence are attractive and manly.
Chunnu waits for her owner because she is paraya dhan. If she is fair skinned, she bullies her ugly fat friend. Because girls are not supposed to be ugly. The fatso deserves it. Munnu bullies the thin nerdy boy. Mommy Daddy come to know and give a proud smile. The thin nerd gets beaten up by daddy for crying. Fatso gets scolded for stress-eating.
I was talking about emotional abuse and unavailability. In a country where physical abuse ( not sexual ) is a matter of pride, it feels stupid to even talk about emotional abuse. Who hasn't heard some old man proudly saying "we had so much severe punishments in our days. We always got beaten black and blue. We obeyed our elders blindly. Never thought about right-wrong, good-bad. We were so respectful and these brats are so opinionated ! That's why we were raised so great. And kids these days, all the law and love have spoilt them. We had such a tough life and these brats keep complaining" 😑
The irony is, if we are brats then we must be shitty as parents. But if someone decides not to reproduce and add to this overwhelming population, those same people will react like the world would end if even one fertile person chooses not to conceive. In India, everyday is the judgement day.
But still I feel positive because even among all these, the mass consciousness is increasing. Even kids these days are much more conscious and mature. Not only social, political and economical consciousness is also increasing among the youth. Social media is a strong weapon ( though it too is filled with trolls, frauds and has a widespread dark side ). Still baby steps. People like you and me should participate in spreading this consciousness among the mass. Kindness is reflective and that's why a powerful boomerang against the darkness. The world is out to snatch that power from us. We must not succumb to that and stop being kind. But we shouldn't hesitate to show teeth and spit fire where it's needed. The Balance.
