About 2 years ago I made a list of all the nominations of this award from 1954-Present in a Word document. Then I made an effort to see as many as I could to tick them off my list. I was down to the last few then I lost interest because I couldn't find a decent link, however I recently discovered the website Einthusan, and they have the last 2 films I haven't seen yet.

My achievement: I have seen 275 of 277 Best Actress performances of all-time. This week I should complete the challenge. That's it, that's the post.

How many have you seen?

Thank you.

Not at all. I disagree with so many wins/nominations, even from way back in the day.

One example is, and as much as I adore her: Padmini Kolhapure won for 1982's Prem Rog but for me, hers was the 7th best performance of that year. There were better performances from Rekha (Jeevan Dhaara), Shabana Azmi (Arth*, Namkeen), Sharmila Tagore (Namkeen), Smita Patil (Bazaar), and Hema Malini (Satte Pe Satta).

*Shabana won for Arth the following year (no idea why it's nomination was delayed by a year)

Also, in the first few years of the awards, the films that were nominated were released 2 years before the awards were held. So all the 1954 nominations were from films released in 1952. By the time they fixed this anomaly: the performances of 1956 suffered and there are no nominations from that year. Eg the 1957 awards nominated films from 1955, but the 1958 awards nominated films from 1957.

My nominees for 1956 would be:

Nutan - Heer

Meena Kumari - Halaku

Madhubala - Tarana

Nargis - Chori Chori

Meena Kumari - Ek Hi Raasta

Shakila - C.I.D.

Wow...you really have great knowledge about all this. I liked how you elaborated the anomalies in nominations back in the day. I really had no idea about it. I'm impressed.

Yes I remember that thread. I stated Tabu had been nominated most times for Best actress in a leading role without winning. Ironically Salman Khan has been nominated most times for Best Actor in a leading role without winning

And this rare feat alone should push you to take Jitesh's job at Filmfare.👍🏼

Nonetheless, your tenure to present BOIFA Best Actress is now confirmed. 😎

A sort of consolation: Tabu has won 7 Filmfare Awards in other categories (including one @ Filmfare South) which is one of the highest number of awards. I think the most is 9 trophies won by Jaya Bachchan.

Anushka Sharma and Sonam Kapoor each have 4 nominations without winning. Although they have won an award each in other categories.

The 2 biggest names that have never won a single Filmfare Award are Shraddha Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. There is still hope: Mala Sinha (born in 1936) debuted in 1954, was nominated 4 times in the 1960s but didn't win until 2018 when she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award - 64 years after her first film. (I remember tweeting Filmfare about this, that they should give her an award while she's still alive, and they did)

hmm Shabana and Sharmila Tagore didn't even get a nomination for their performance in Namkeen..

Thank you so much x

It's so hard to pick but Sridevi in English Vinglish was beyond flawless and so iconic and to do that after 15 years away just takes the cake. Kangana in Queen, Alia in Highway/Udta Punjab/Raazi, Tabu in Andhadhun/Haider, Priyanka in Barfi/Bajirao Mastani, Kajol in We Are Family, Vidya in Kahaani, Deepika in Tamasha, Anushka in ADHM, Radhika in Parched, Rani in Mardaani

Male performances: Shahid in Haider/Udta Punjab, Ranbir in Tamasha/ADHM, Sanjay Mishra in Ankhon Dekhi, Aamir in PK/Dhoom 3/Dhobi Ghat, Ranveer in Lootera/Padmavati
